[HOME AND YOUTH [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 February 1907

[HOME AND YOUTH HOW THE HEN RAISED THE MORTGAGE . BY FRANCES CAT . HREATl . INGERSOIX , OHIO . He had read the poultry papers , With statistics by the score ; He had conned the city markets , With quotations running o er ; Till his brain was full of visions How the hen of fabled lays Could his pockets fill with money And a great big mortgage raise . So he hied him to the country , To a fine sequestered spot , Paid down some hundred dollars And the great big mortgage got . Then he bought some incubators , And of eggs a hundred score—Counting every egg a chicken Worth a dollar—perhaps more . Hen-house , brooders—all the modern Poultry fancies of the day , And a hundred blue-blood chickens , Warranted each day to lay . Now , he said , Ill show these farmers Who have drudged and toiled in vain How a greenhorn from the city Dollars to their cents will gain . Raising chickens is so easy , lt is nothing else but play ; Very little work to gather Eggs by . dozens every day . Every egg will ...

IHOUSEHOLD ] [Newspaper Article] — Ohio Farmer — 9 February 1907

IHOUSEHOLD ] TIED WORK . A REVIVAL OF A VERY ANCIENT ART . Although to a certain extent descriptive of the process , the name tied work fails to convey any impression of what the work really is , at least not until after the method of making it has been explained . It is an art so old that we have no history of FIG . 1 . —SECTION OF PATTERN FOR TIED-WORK DECORATION . Its beginning ; and it is done by those who have revived it just exactly as it was done centuries ago . The very first ornamentation of cloth was done by this process . The ancients were very skillful at It , and , though it must have been by the expenditure of endless care and patience , they got marvelous results . The fact that tied work is being revived just now is due , doubtless , partly to the fact that we are at present taking great Interest in the things that are old . and partly because of the peculiar results the process gives . It bears the unmistakable stamp of hand-work , and at the same time it hints stro...
