58 f . 7&& - y IV KANKIN S. LEVIN. THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 1860. The Galveston News of the sdinst, is a veritable holiday edition ten columns to the. page and 'besides an extra quantity of news and missed- laneous matter it contains a full description of the Mardi Gras festivities. A FEW years ago female tem perance crusaders rolled over the land like a wave and the movement subsided. Thisyear the movement has taken the form of petitions to the legisla tures. Temperance people be come enthusiastic by fits and starts. To ease the mind of the Tyler Democrat, the Banner informs that superlatively moral sheet that it is by no means opposed to the moral code, but it does not believe in fanatical ideas; nor does it believe that men can be made moralby legislation. In this it differs from the Democrat. The Belton Journal of last week records the visit of the general manager and several directors of the Santa Fe rail way. It thinks that Belton may get the general offices of the company o...

t THE WEEKLY BANNER. BY RANKIN & LEVIN, THURSDAT", MABCH 10, 1880. The Dallas Herald ol last Saturday says that land com missioner Walsh was in that city the other day looking after the papers supposed to have been in the possession of Col. William Bray. The papers are thought to be forged land titles and it is believed they, are an other missing link in the land forgeries. Dr. Currie, the general agent of the Peabody iund, was interviewed by the' Galveston News, and in reply to the ques1 tion as to what was the inten tion towards Texas schools, said that he could not say, but they were going to aid the 'pub lic schools of Denison, Bren ham and Houston and also the Sam Houston Normal Institute. The ssiJtonoT the Houston Post, himself a school teacher and a former resident of Gal veston, says that that city has lost hundreds of valuable citi zens from the lack of public school advantages. The. pub lic schools have built Brenham Tip and the stoppage of them would cause a regular e...

- V THE WEEKLY BANNER. BY RANKIN & LEVIN. THURSDAY, M1KCH 31. 1880. The Houston P?st is a won derful paper; it employs 3 wonderer; he does nothing but wonder; among other things the Posts wonderer wonders who will be the first men to ask president Fishburn to take a glass of beer at the coming presS convention, and it further wonders what will be the'result. The Houston. Age, a paper hat enjoys the confidence of Gov. Roberts to the fullest ex tent, says the idea that any bad feeling exists between the gov ernor andthe legislature, is ut terly fallacious. The legislature loves the govcrnorand the gov ernor loves the legislature. Peace, harmony and happiness prevail. During his term of office ex president Hayes saved out of his salary -gioo.ooo. This sum is a very comfortable fortune for an unostentatious citizen and it is more than likely that 'Mr. Hayes will be able to live in re tirement without calling upon his friends and admirers for pe cuniary aid. In this respect Hays is a...
