The following extract recalls one of the instances when tho fort was of historic importance : In 17G5, "the Castle" begins to ap pear ns the one place where the English crown was sure of its authority. The staums. bv which a revenue was t 9 J ' intended to be raised from the titish i i colonies, arrived in the hnbor of Huston in September, 17C.S, and were lodged for security at the Castle. The vigorous opposition in America to this stainp-acf, Laving prevented its being in any instance carried into execution, soon procured its repeal. In the course of the following summer all the stamps were returned to England. We congratulate the sterling Democra cy of Cambria, as well as all honest and high-minded Republicans in the northern section of the county, on the result of last Tuesday's work. It is indeed a glorious victory I W. Horace Rose, Esq., has been elected to the Assembly by a major ity of about 300 over the apostate, H. D. Woodruff. Capt. Bonackek is the Sheriff elect by a majority ranging from feven to ten hundred. Al! the other can didates on the regular county ticket have been elected by large majorities. R.
