ARIZONA WEEKLY JOURNAL-MINER. WEDNESDAY . . J ULY 17, . .1&9 J. C Maktin, Editur. Official L'uper of Y&Yapai County STATEHOOD AND CONSTITUTIONAL CONVETION TALK. The Journal-Miner is already on record' as being opposed to statehood at the present time. Some of the rea sons have heretofore been stated, viz: that neither the population or the amount of taxable property will justify it at present A liberal estimate of the population of the territory at present cannot place it greater than 6o,ooo, while the property shown by the last year's assessment is a little over $26, 000,000. With a large proportion of territorial expenses paid by the gen eral government now, the floating indebt edness is increasing and the bonding of the indebtedness has been resorted to in order to redeem outstanding war rants. But admitting that statehood is desir able, there is no good argument that can be advanced, for holding the con stitution convention, as proposed by t cx-Guvernor Zulick, and as wa...

The paper in question says that ''The vote at the last general election, counted at the usual ratio in the east would give about 60,000 of a population, while it is a well known fact that an unusually large pop ulation of Arizona stays away from the pr'ls from carelessness and indifference v..d how great a proportion may be in ferred from the fact that the difference be tween the entire vote on delegate to congress and the councilmen at large, was nearly five hundred in the territory."
