Late in the evening, Long street, Polk and Scott charged simultaneously and the Fed cral rout began, while the Con federates followed, shouting, firing and using the bayonet. The rout was complete. The Confederates were victorious an,l captured fifty cannon, thousands of prisoners and immense quantities of army stuff. Rnsecrans hailed his men at Chat lanooga. The Confederates did not follow. They had won glory enough for two days. The Con federate force all told was about 50,000, while the Yankee force was estimated at 65KKi men actually engaged. C, when the Senate of Rome decreed forty days of Thanks giving for Caesar's victories in Gaul, Egypt, and Zela and Juba, in Africa.
