BEST THOROUGHFARE IN EDDY COUNTY Carlsbad-Monument Komi, February 25, líl 1. Mr. Wm. II. Mullatie, Kditor Carlsbad Current. Carlsbad, New Mexico. Dear Sir;-1 have always ad mired the Carlsbad Current for its veracity and lack of exagger ation in which virtues, alas, too many of our newspapers are lacking. Imagine my surprise therefore when I read in a late issue of your estimable paper a statement purporting to have been made by myself which re flects on the former reputation of your paper. In this statement you quote me as saying that the road through the sand between Carlsbad and Monument will cost $3f).0) per mile, whereas what I actually did say was that the rock could be put on for that amount; in the first place how ever the sand must be removed from on top of the clay in the old road bed from which the material is obtained. Then the clay must b...

NINETEENTH YEAR STATEHOOD FILIBUSTERED New Mexico Compelled to Wait Until the Special Set. ion for Recognition. OWEN, OF OKLAHOMA, TO BLAME Ainiu me wildest scenes ever a . I ii enacted in recent years on the floor of the senate.New Mexico's immediate hope for statehood was strangled hy the filibuster ing tactics of Senator Owen, of Oklahoma. All through Friday night the New Mexico matter formed the real basis for the obstructive tactics o f M r. Owen. He held the tariff board proposition in the balance so long, that it finally lost out when it reached the house. The great government appropriation bills also hung in the balance ur.til Mr. Owen had secnred a rider to the house joint resolution ad mitting New iVexico by which Arizona was included. In view of the fact that Arizona had not complied with the provisions of the enabling act in an official way, the senate was compelled to submit to the dictation of the senator from Oklahoma, and he held the floor until just before me expira...

In the failure of statehood at i the hand of the Sixty-first ton-j jress the people of New Mexico have just cause for grievance. They have been promised statehood for many yert, and this time It did aeem that the promise was about to be fulfilled. Hence the disappointment of Saturday was all the more bitter. tion of the president." From this sentence It is evident that the belief held by some in Roswell that the president has power to act is also held in Wash ington. Of course in a care !ike present one the hope of the people of New Mexico must be based upon what the president will think, and how be will construe the enabling act in this respect...
