'Philadelphia letter to tlio Cincinnati Enquirer I stood lor along time before a picture yes terday, the life-size portrait of a lovely laugh ing child. The face was that of a boy of 4 years, lair and dimpled, with a little rosy mouth just made for kissing, large, clear brown oyes, through which a happy little soul shone brightly, and soft, flaxen curls sliad ng a broad, white brow, and falling about a -round white neck. "That is Charley, my little Charley," said the •master of the houso sadly, anil, looking from his careworn, nervous face to the cherub vision •on the wall, for the first time an understanding of the tragedy of Charley lioss dawned upon «ae, and for the benefit of the new generation -and those to whom the tiny hero of a mourn ful tale has been but a newspaper myth I am going to take up the freshest t...

Terrors ot ttyspepsia. The terrors of dyspepsia, as -graphi cally depicted in the St. Louis Globe Democrat, together with the description of a crowd of invalids at Carlsbad, Ger many, constitute a valuable lesson in teaching moderation in eating and drink ing: "I stood out from its line and looked at those behind me. I don't think I ever saw such a miserable, sour, dejected-looking crowd in my life before. They looked worse than any soup house brigade you ever saw, although they were nearly all well dressed. It was a regular parade of liver complaints. There was the man with the dry.liver, with a grin on his face that would scare a South African baboon: there was the man with the torpid liver, look ing as though he was calculating how much enjoymeni it would afford him to cut the hearts out of the crowd there was the man with the enlarged liver, whose eyes seemed to have gone into retirement at the back of his head there was the man whose liver wouldn't give up bile enough to as...

.'t'l VOTj. VI.-NO. 13 THE WEEKLY ALERT. .1. 0. WARNOCK, EdiT»% th HE appointment of a new county re publican committee at the convention held in this city on Wednesday was cer tainly an extraordinary proceeding for such a convention, and while there may be no objection to the committee as men whatever it is an innovation on political usage that may well be questioned. The convention was called for the single pur pore of appointing delegates to the ter ritorial and legislative conventions and certainly had no more authority for ap pointing a county committee to succeed tbe committee that called this conventio than the convention at Huron last spring to appoint delegates to tbe national con vention would have bad to appoint anew territorial central committee. Tbe prin ciple is precisely the same in both cases. The usage in all political parties is to ap point such committees by conventions called alone for the business of such coun ty or district. As, for instance, township mee...

It was at one of New England'* pretty towns that Nina Walters first joined our show, with her fellow performer, Louis Mason and Joe -Fuller apprenticed like himself to old Pa Dryer, who was wont to boast that the chil dren he took to train were as well cared for in every respect as his own, which statement I have never had any reason to doubt and I may say I have more than once witnessed the •thct impartiality with which he administered corporal punishment to his progeny and ap prentices if thoy failed to come up to the mark in their respective duties. Many a time have I Men him in his ring, hia full, red face beam ing with gonial smiles as he put a child through -he pad-act with:. "Now, Maudie dear, one, two, throe, jump. •Oh!—can't? Things in General. The own of Selma, Ala.. claims to have tie most wonderful artesian well in the nro?ld, and it would seem with good leoson. The remarkable feature in the case |s that two separate streams of.wa /r, it entirely different properties flow com this well. The singular effect in Question is produced, it seems, by the /simple insertion jf a two-inch pipe with in a four-inch tube. The larger pipe I descends to depth of some four hun dred feet, ihe'water is strongly impreg nated. with sulphur aud iron and, com pared with the temperature of the twin stream, is quite warm. One hundred thousand United States Soldiers were massed under General Sheridan in the Southwest just after the war, to induce Louis Napoleon to let Mexico alone. General Grant was in favor of force, Secretary Seward couched a diplomatic request to the French emperor in the politest terms. This angered Grant. General Ayres says he took dinner .with General Grant that day, and he. said hardly a word throu...

f!* ./V i| IS I, -iisfch ^luc ^Vlcvt BY MARSHALL McOLURE. JAMESTOWN, I It has been imderstood for some time I pay the bills. But that must be distinct ly understood. One lesson is to be learned from the experience of this country in the North, and that is that the government must be committed to no more folly,of this sort. If any millionaire wants to send an expedition on his own hook, well and good, but let it be purely & private enterprise. The government must not any longer take the resp®nsibility of sending brave men who have enlisted in its service to Ereeze and starve in the Arctics. The production of wheat, corn, beef uid pork by the farmers of this country .is vastly in exceac. of the home demand, ind the surplus a6 these products for rthe foreign marketj's steadily increas ing. At tihe same' tome the production af manufactured commodities, cf cot :ton and woolen goofs, of iron, steel .nd hardware, greatly.cxceeds the needs Df the consumers at ho»e. The ntanu jfacturing...
