coach Bennie Edens dies Point Loma High School head football coach Bennie Edens passed away at age 82 on Friday, Feb. 8, leaving a legacy of fond memories for friends, former students, neighbors and the opponents his teams faced on the field. He served to inspire, motivate and mold the character of students at PLHS for 50 years. “He and his son, Jimmie, came over to my house to watch the Super Bowl game ( Feb. 3). It was like old times watching the game with him,” said former Pointers quarterback Bill Settles with the PLHS class of 1966. The following day, Edens suffered a serious heart attack and was hospitalized before he passed away five days later. Kimiser* Kluct, Bringing you Beautiful Windows Since 1981 Councilman Scott Peters enters City Attorney race Scott Peters, San Diego City Council President District 1, announced he will enter the race for the city attorney, Monday. In an statement following his announcement, Peters said,“ For the past five years, we’ve put the pension system back on its feet. We’ve fixed reporting and budgeting problems dating back to the 1980’ s. We stopped pension under funding. As a result of this work, our city actuary has declared the pension system financially sound.” Peters lives in La Jolla with his wife, son and daughter. He is running against City Attorney Mike Aguirre, Jan Goldsmith, Dan Coffey, Amy Lupine, Lee Burdick and District 5 Councilman Brian Maienschein. Mission Bay Park or the north side of the San Diego River are possible sites for a facility that would tell the story of the river, said San Diego River Park Executive Director Rob Hutsel. “It’s something that would enhance Mission Bay Park as well as the estuary,” Swink said. SeaWorld will break ground at the end of the month on a 9,000-square-foot administration building, said SeaWorld’s Patrick Owen. An alternate sand management site would require a buffer with a 10-mile radius, suitable slopes and at least 8 acres of space. Possible alternatives include Montgomery Field and MCAS Miramar. The average cost to remove a beached boat is $ 1,500 to $ 2,000, Strobel said. Roughly 15 to 25 boats are abandoned every year, he said. The state’s harbor code requires abandoned watercraft to be held for 30 days, while the city mandates 90 days. Referring to a 65-foot sailboat abandoned in Mission Bay near Mariner’s Point in September, he said,“ We were sort of handcuffed by the policy.” Enfor...
