Foreign >cwi. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 2 October 1847

Foreign News China -- From China we have papers to June 3d, and from Singapore, to April 31. On April 3d, an English force on board of three steamers appeared off Canton without any previous notice being given either to the Chinese or their countrymen. On their way they took and destroyed all the principal forts at the Bogne and in the river, blowing up the magazines and spiking 827 cannons, without the loss of a man. The occasion of this movement and the results, are given at length in the Chinese Repository for April, and as they are of general interest, having grown out of a dispute about land we shall give them in full in our next. -- Polynesian. The Mission in China -- The affair of the French Mission in China has been settled. And the French Consulate at Canton is suppressed. A French Charge d'affaires is appointed to the Celestial Empire. M. FourthRouen has been nominated to the post ; he is to reside at Canton, where the Viceroy resides, the legal representative of the Emper...

[From the N. O. tVaruae.] PRESSED INTO THE SERVICE. [Newspaper Article] — California Star — 2 October 1847

[From the N. O. Picayune.] PRESSED INTO THE SERVICE. 'Mr. Tar!' said the Recorder, yesterday morning, as if he was anxious to ascertain whether there was any individual of the name present, and, if so, that he would !ike to take a small observation of the person bearing such an odoriferous name. No one rose to the summons, but the Recorder seeing a police officer telegraphing a red faced, weather beaten tar, in one end of the box, with hair enough around his face for at least a baker's dozen of stage boswains, inquired what the man's name was. 'John Hall, your honor,' said the sailor rising and slapping his tarpaulin down on the railing. 'John Hull, your honor: and may I be introduced for the first time in my life to the bo'sins' cat if Jack Hull was ever ashamed of his name in whatever port he was brought to an anchor Hull's a name , as 11 do to stand by in the rougheat sort of a gale, or the greatest ealai that ever pst old Boras asleep.' * He told as bis name «-«• Joan Ter, last ...
