I,mid Grants to Volunteers. Tire Federal Gwermnent will, no djubt, make a grat of land to every volunteer who enliis for three years. The Chicago Platfirm contains the following resolution:-* "li'solccd, 'l'hatlve protest against any sale or alenatiu to others of the Public Lands held by actual settlers, land against ariyvicjr of the Homestead policy which regatls the settlers as paupers or suppliaUs for public bounty; and we demand thepassage by Congress of the complete and satisfactory Homestead measure, which has already passed the House." The Homestead iill icrc referred to, had been carried through the House by Republican votes, Uit vas defeated in the Senate by Southern votes. Hostilities in Arizona. | The Mesilla Times, of July 27th, I contains the following: I ° j Lieut. Col. Baylor, commanding the Confederate forces at Fort lilis.s, Texas left there on the 2 Ith instant, with the forces under his command, for the Mesilla valley. The force under his command was some 300 men. On the night of the 21th a position had been taken by the Confederate troops within 000 yards of Fort l'illmore; pickets were placed out, and every precaution ! taken to storm the fort by surprise the | next morning. The plan would have been a success but for the descrsion of a picket, who went into the fort and gave the alarm. !The Confederate force then moved ! across the river, and at daylight took the town of Santa Thomas. Two companies of I'nited States troops had been stationed there, but had retreated.— Light prisoners were taken, and dismissed after being sworti not to light against the Confedeiacy.
