1 sS," - - I " I V- THE TEXE GRAPH. Houston, Wednesday, &ec. 35, 1889. The appointment of John R. Jones to the office of Post Master General, has been confirmed by the Senate. ' The bill containing the modifications of the Loan Law as suggested by Gen. Hamilton, was passed in 'the House o( Representatives, on the 17th inst., by a vote of twenty eight to nine, and in theSpnate on the 19th, by a roteof nine to two. It has, therefore, undoubtedly become a law. It is intended chiefly to provide for the more cer- tain operation of the sinking fund, and does not materially vary the terms upon which the loan is to be negotiated- There"can be little doubt that this law will enable our Commissioners to complete the negotiation without diffi- culty. We therefore advise those who may hold the pro- missory notes of the Republic, not to dispose of them at the present rates of discount. Many intelligent citizens haTe questioned the propriety of authorizing this loan to be negotiated; but when...

r i r y THE TELEG'RAPH. Houston, Wednesday, Jan. I, 1840. N. Amory, Esq, has been appointed Tecretary of Le- gation, to the United States. Juan Pablo de Anava, the Mexican Federal General who has been in this city for the last six months, left here last week. It is understood that he has set out for Mat- amoros, having received authentic information of the cap ture of that place by his party. The steamer New York, reported lost off the month of the Brazes, arrived safely at Galveston List Saturday, having been only detained by contrary winds. The recommendations of the Secretary of the Treasury, contained in his report, published in our columns some weeks since, we are gratified to learn have been adopted by congress. The advantage and necessity of the meas- ures thus taken to increase the amount and insure thccol- lection of the revenues of government are too apparent to require any defence, and under the active and untiring sur- veillance or the present head of the treasury depart...
