April 1980 S? 9^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal 20 REFLECTIONS continued food, art, calligraphy, costumes of ancient China and banners and kites festooned the atrium. One of the most popular events was the gourmet cooking de- monstration. Immediately upon turning off the flames and setting aside the dishes of delectable food, customers queued up and the entire menu of shrimp and vegetables, steak and peppers and those ever delicious egg rolls were eagerly snapped up by the patrons. The dragon dancers (or lion dancers) got off to their usual late start because they lost their way . . . the reluctant dragon? . . . but they gave a rousing performance of kicking the let- tuce and tangerines into the audience. This is heavy stuff and not for the weak because the effort required just to dance with the lion's head is her- culean. The clown who teased the lion was an atten- tion getter. Even a girl scout troop learned to say happy new year in Chinese. We can hardly wait for Dr. Yao and her te...

21 & &} Qf Southwest Chinese Journal April 1980 REFLECTIONS by WILLIAM DER BING In the history of the human race, there is no spectacle more reassuring than the sudden appearance of robins to signify that the onslaught of winter is about over and the promise of spring is at hand. Spirits soar. Smiles appear. Laughter is infectious, Strong hand clasps are removed from the ritualistic into a genuine feeling of "so glad to see you." The old laundry has been washed and hung out to dry. Spots and stains still remain. But then, the fabric is still good and strong and for all that, we'll con- tinue to use them. . . with the clean side out in the open. With fresh breezes whipping up the clothes on the line into an animated chorus line of high kicks and a kaleidoscope of colors, why don't we take a peek into the basket and see what's in store for "our back yard." Trinity Pines is one of the late Reverend Travis Keys' intense interests. Thelma Keys wants very much to help follow throu...

April 1980 5? Southwest Chinese Journal 22 ALLIED BANK VICE PRESIDENT AND MRS. C.K. PETER KWAN by June Dove Leong C. K. Peter Kwan was headed for the University of Texas when his friends Donald Lee, Hamilton Chow, C. C. Huang, and Henry Gee convinced him of the practicality of remaining in Houston. Besides they liked the personable fellow too well to see him leave town. At the time, it took six Hong Kong dollars for the equivalent of one U. S. dollar, and Peter really preferred to save his parents the financial care of his college education. Therefore, enroll- ment at the University of Houston seemed the logical choice. Working by day at the Bank of the Southwest, he was able to attend classes in the evenings at the University of Houston. It lengthened the educational process, but enabled him to become self-sufficient and eventually he earned for himself a Masters in Business Administration. It was the culmination of his educational achievements - for he had prior acquisition of a g...

23 Sj i$} ^ ^ Southwest Chinese Journal April 1980 LETTER TO THE EDITOR RE: Mr. William Der Bing's article "Reflections" in your February and March issues. Although I am a Lou Faan (Baak Kuei, Faan Kuei), it seems that I am more deeply concerned with ending discrimination to Chinese (and all others) than the leaders of the Chinese community. . . Analyzing a problem is the first step toward a solution! . . . Most White Americans have a very stereotyped view of Chinese people. They can see Chinese as laundry or restaurant workers, but, they cannot picture them in positions requiring intelligence, imagination, assertiveness, or decisiveness. Why should this be? The fault is on both sides, as in all human misunderstandings. Chinese are so strongly traditional, that the majority do not even try to fully adapt to the ways of the U. S. An old saying is "when in Rome do as the Romans." Much of the parental teaching of Chinese children, is prohibi- tive to adjusting to American employment si...
