do my job," she told MCV. "I thought maybe I can make a bit of a differ- ence here and try and get the general public to think that their kids can look up to me and aspire to be me — but I'm gay and it's not a big deal." Norway debates ending Lutheranism as official religion after 450 years Norway launched a debate Tuesday on sepa- rating church and state after more than 450 years of Lutheranism as the nation's official religion. Under the current system, the church is funded by the central government, which also employs its staff, including bishops and other clergy. This has led to conflicts, such as the government over- riding the church in 2000 by appointing a clergy- man living in a gay partnership, which was in line with secular anti-discrimination laws but against church policy. A 20-member state-church panel recommend- ed the separation by an 18-to-2 vote, although the earliest such a divorce could take place would be 2014. It would require a constitutional amend- ment approv...

to further his radical Christian right crusade against the LGBT community. Who would have been hurt if the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) and the Danish Association of Gays and Lesbians (LBL) were allowed to speak for the LGBT community at the United Nations' Economic and Social Council, which advises the international organi- zation on economic and social issues'? After all, there are 634 NGOs affiliated with the council. We're talking about groups like the Humane Society, the American Jewish Congress and Greenpeace. But we're also talking about groups like Focus on the Family, Feminists for Life of America, the National Right to Life Education Trust Fund and the Alliance for Marriage, I think it would only be fair to balance out some of the homophobic political perspectives inherent in some of these organizations with a few LGBT voices. But instead of a fair hearing — which all other NGOs who have requested representation have gotten — ILGA's and LBL's requests w...

I ife+sty ledance ainting m with people Choreographer Bruce Wood reflects on the last 10 years arid his subversive new dance set to the music of Cole Porter By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer W'hen Bruce Wood, the Fort Worth choreographer and head of the Bruce Wood Dance Company, was deciding upon a program for his winter performance, he knew it would include the world premiere of "Anything Goes," based on the songs of Cole Porter. But he wanted his dancers to weigh in on how to round it out. "I let the dancers pick two dances they wanted to perform again" from his extensive repertoire, Wood says during a break from rehearsals. "'Being,' set to the music of Bach, was their number one choice. 'Chichester Psalms,' a really beautiful piece of music by Leonard Bernstein, was their number two." And with that bit of democracy — a term rarely associated with the world of professional dance — the program was finalized for "A Spring in Your Step," opening at Bass Hall on Monday. While Wood l...

Presents Movies That Will Corrupt You." "10 years ago I would've been put in a mental institution for showing these films," Waters said. "Now we're having a party for it?" The day before, PlanetOut hosted a brunch at Cisero's where Honey Labrador ("Queer Eye for the Straight Girl") and Daniela Sea ("The L Word") watched PlanetOut short-film entries and a new documentary, "Be Real." When celebrities weren't joining the same- sex action — Kick Nolte, Toni (Toilette, Michael Rappaport, Anne Heche and Timothy Hutton were spotted at the Queer Lounge — they swagged it up. At the Ultimate Comfort Lounge, I bumped into Scott Wolf, who nabbed a cool new Blackberry. Other famous folks seeking freebies included Lucy Liu, Gretchen Moll, Matt Dillon and The Beastie Boys. Happily, gay filmmakers took away the most treasured goodies of all: Sundance film- making prizes. movie follows movie rules for how that decision should be handled. The acting isn't bad. It might help if it were because then we wouldn't care so much about the characters. Perabo unsuccessfully tries to be the next Julia Roberts, but at least she does a passable English accent. Goode is good, but Headey is better. Celia Imrie and Anthony Head are fine as Rachel's parents. And yes, that damn song, the Turtles' "Happy Together," which provides the film's title, turns up during the grandly romantic climax. It's been going through my head since the movie was first announced, and now it's stuck in heavy rotation. I'm considering a lobotomy. Most of "Imagine Me and You" is devoted to the two women's approach-avoidance issues. I'd recommend avoidance, unless you want to spend Valentine's Day thinking love isn't worth the trouble. REVISITING 'GIANT' Before casting "Giant," director George Stevens asked Southern Methodist University art professor Ed Bearden to draw the storyboards. These p...

books Touchdown! Gay NFL player's memoir scores with salacious tales about a fumbled past By J.S.Hall Contributing Writer ROYJ SI Out of Bounds: Coming Out of Sexual Abuse, Addiction and My Life of Lies in the NFL Closet," by Roy Simmons with Damon DiMarco in collaboration with David Fisher and Jimmy Hester. (Carroll & Graf, 2005), 288 pp., $25. No matter how talented he might have been on the field, Roy Simmons will be remembered as the second NFL player to come out of the closet (in 1992). In 2003, Simmons disclosed his HIV- positive status. In "Out of Bounds," !his compelling and harrowing autobiogra- phy, Simmons comes clean about the toll that living a lie has taken on his life. Those expecting a book full of game plays, football statistics and edited high- lights are in for a shock. When such elements inevitably are part of "Out of Bounds," they take a back seat to the often-lurid details of Simmons' many addictions and the consequences of his actions. He's not shy about h...

music Good gossip Queer fat-feminist singer brings Southern attitude to Great Northwest By Gilbert Garcia Pop Music Critic The Gossip "Standing In the Way of Control" Kill Rock Stars Proudly queer, unre- pentantly plump and unabashedly sexual, The Gossip's Beth Ditto is no shrinking Southern violet. Born and raised in Searcy, Ark., Ditto found fortune early, forming The Gossip with two high school friends. Now based in Portland, The Gossip have been tearing up the birthplace of the riot grrl movement with their irresistibly groovy punk. This year, the band released "Standing In the Way of Control," their fourth album, and the disc showcases a band that know what they're after. And more impressively, a singer who knows how to get it. Just like everything about this group, The Gossip's sound is easier to describe than to imag- ine. Wielding his guitar the way other bands might use a bass, guitarist Nathan Howdeshell plucks relentless grooves. Meanwhile, drummer Hannah Blilie churns ou...

together Dallas lesbian duo Bandmates kick out special Valentine's Day ^ show By Daniel A. Kusner Life+Style Editor Give me homegrown, lo-fi ditties over saturated studio fare any time. From the near-suburban land- scape of Lakewood comes Bandmates, Dallas' guitar- and-bass lesbian duo who aren't pining away for a cor- porate record deal. They write, perform, record and post tracks on MySpace.com because that's how they get their groove on. With a flair for bright vin- tage fashions, partners Susan Carson and Kimberly Cody craft a laid-back slowcore sound that harkens back to that halcyon era of '80s college rock — before digital audio, drum sampling and Vocoders. Cody's gentle vocal styling resembles Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star, only without such a sedative timbre. When Carson isn't compliment- ing Cody on backup vocals, she's switching between bass and a sublime mid-'60s Rickenbacker 324. Cody and Carson first crossed paths in 1989. Along with Cody's then-husband, a guitarist, t...

trave 30 HI | ■ -—- *" - Enough Love to go around? AA begins multi-state service from Love Field with promotional offg keting for American, said in a press release. "We had to reduce flights at DFW in order to make these resources available for service at Love Field," said Tim Kincaid, manager of cor- porate communications for American. The turnaround has been quick — less than three months. But Kincaid said gates will be fin- ished and a temporary ticket counter will be avail- able March 2, the first day flights are scheduled. American is backing up the launch with some incentives. Customers who fly at least three round-trips out of Love or DFW airport until May 26 will receive 30,000 frequent flyer miles. (Fly six round-trips in the same period and the miles double to 60,000.) An additional 1,000 bonus miles will be offered for purchases made on American's Web site, aa.com. tylesports Net results Mauresrno captures Australian Open By Arnold Wayne Jones Staff Writer Being an openly gay professional athlete is still a rarity — no American man, for instance, has ever come out while an active member of a major professional team like baseball or football. But if there's one sport where coming out does- n't have to be the death knell for a career, it's women's tennis. In addition to Martina and Billie Jean — or for that matter Dana, the fictional tennis pro on "The L Word" — one of the world's top players for seven years has been open about her orientation. French player Amelie Mauresmo nonchalantly came out as lesbian in a 1999 interview, chatting about her girlfriend, Sylvie Bourdon.. Five years later, she was ranked the number one female net- ter in the world. She did so, however, without claiming a Grand Slam victory. But her drought ended last week. On Jan. 27, Mauresmo won the Australian Open by defeating Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne in straight sets...
