October 6 1992 FEATURES T Mudslinging By Jonathan Woody Education has become a hot issue this election year. The United States is steadily falling behind in the quality of educa- tion our children are receiving in public and private schools as compared with the rest of the industrial nations. Math sci- ence and map skills compre- hension are among the main sub- jects American children are hav- ing difficulty in according to Alan Shapiro in his recent book We're Number ONE. Educa- tion has indeed become too low on America's importance list for too long. Some revamping of our education system obviously needs to take place but it is doubtful as to whether Clinton holds the key. According to the 928 92 issue of the Christian Science Monitor Clinton has proposed spending an additional $10 bil- lion on federal schools and train- ing programs. A recent study shows thatwespendmoremoney on education than any of the other industrialized nations. We are even ahead of Japan and Germany in educa...

8 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT 225U T A ow the media is running the election campaign Tara Tremaine --..... . .. . . . n 1 1- by Tara Tremaine IfWilliam Randolph Hearst was alive today he'd be so proud of the journal- ists who practically run this country. Granted they are the public's watch dog keeping government in line but during every elec- tion year biased news reports become the main source forinformation. Not that there has never been biased news coverage it just gets real old when you're bombarded by it during the pre-election months. The media is very se- lective in what information it divulges to the public. When it is an election year however they need to change their ways. There are several people whose only information source is through television or radio. So the political informa- tion they constantly hear from the news is interpreted as being what the majority of the American public be- lieves therefore they will believe it as well. The me- dia has always been a subtle y...

They are all dedicated to the delicate art of acting. Latin Phillips was just "look- ing for an activity to become - involved in" at Keller High School. Little did she know how important acting and the theatre would become to her. The once blond now bru- nette "Lar" is living proof of some of the dedication required to become successful in this field. Lauri began to be involved with the theatre in high school acting in her first play The Desk Set. She played other leading roles participated in many church programs and also par- ticipated in University Interscho- lastic League (UIL) one-act plays while in high school. 4 FEATURES SK MUDSLINGING THE ISSUE: ABORTION The information addressedin theMudslinging article does not necessarily reflect views ex- pressed by HardinSimmons University Editor J ML M Democrats: Pro-Choice By Sara Allsup Freedom is embedded into the very fiber of America it is the most important element" that separates our country from the rest of the world. Today our freedom is being threatened there are some that believe the government should make our decisions for us. The issue is abortion and instead of being a personal and moral decision there are people that believe that the individual has no rights that government should dictate our rights and limitations concern- ing this issue. Gov. Bill Clinton is not pro-abortion he is pro-choice and freedom of choice is as American as apple pie. Pro- lifers are wanting to make abor- tion a government issue that is wrong and leaning close to so- cialism. Abortion is a personal and moral issue for every indi- vidual. There is no way to c...
