"Our AD says for a llrst-year ath- letic program — and I'm not just talking about football, but for all sports — we competed better than any of the other Garland schools did. He's been real happy with our progress. We expect that progress to continue." As for Behrens' adjustment to a new coaching atmosphere, Phillips said he's handled it without a hitch. "He's handled it the same way he would at another school," the senior signal caller said. "He pushes us more now that we're varsity. He's wanting us to win more district games, and we probably will do bet- ter becausc we hav...

Sports Thursday, August 11, 2005 THE SACHSE NEWS Section B - Page 3 Sachse preparing for tournament By Adam Boedeker The Sachsc volleyball team will get a taste of the best Texas has to offer Friday and Saturday when the Lady Mustangs travel to the Duneanville Tournament, where 36 of the state's best teams will await. Bad news struck Thursday when starting middle blocker Kadie Murphy suffered a sprained ankle in practice. The injury will test the depth of the team, but it's one coach Rikki Williamson said her team should pass. "We lose with (Murphy's) injury," Williamson said. "She puts up a good block and is a good hit- ting threat." Sachse kicked off regular season play Tuesday at Piano, but said Murphy's loss doesn't concern her too much. "We don't have one player this year," she said. "This year we can scatter around our offense, so we're blessed by that. I don't depend on one kid to get it done." i After Tuesday's game, the real test comes Friday and Saturday. The Duneanville T...

Education Thursday, August 11, 2005 - THE SACHSE NEWS Section B Page 5 School buses roll again Monday Drivers, riders reminded to follow road rules (WrewNArioNAM By Donnita Nesbit Fisher Wylic children will go hack to class Monday, Aug. 15. Many of those kids will get to school on the quintessential yellow bus. There are special traffic rules for school buses both on the road and inside the tubular vehicle. According to WISD Transportation Coordinator Kellie Jones, the most important safety rule for students is simply stay in a scat. Although buses do not have set belts, they are designed for safety, according to WISD Transportation Coordinator Kellie Jones. The scats, si/.e and weight of the bus contribute to its security, she said. "The seats arc padded and have a very high back that is also padded," Jones said. "In the event of a colli- sion, this offers protection from the front and the back. That's why it is important for students to sit down and face forward." Scat belts on bu...

Page 2 - Section C - C&S Media Publications - August 10-11, 2005 Quick, easy everyday tips can make difference when it comes to saving energy Energy consumption is on the rise, and the depletion of fossil fuels has become a growing prob- lem in the United States. According to the United States Department of Energy, the U.S. uses almost a million dollars of electricity a minute, which is equivalent to approximately $525.6 billion each year. On a smaller scale, the average American family spends nearly $1,500 a year on util- ity bills alone, with 60 percent acquired from electricity bills. Chances are your expenses may rise during the summer months, in part because children are home from school and many people relax the tight control they had over their utilities in the winter. The common phrase, "reduce, reuse, recycle" has become synony- mous with saving energy and resources, and the sizzling months of summer will be more enjoyable and affordable if families consider these quick...
