KING'S ISLAND. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 1 July 1826

KING'S ISLAND, We have pleasure in being able to communicate the following anecdotes of this island, gathered from George Robin- son, who resided on it thirteen years. This old man, at the age of 67, has been compelled to quit the cottage and garden which he had constructed there, in order to escape from the outrages of the despe- rate characters who appear to be daily gaining strength in those parts. There is an excellent harbour which has been named Elephant's Bay, from the number of sea elephants found in it. It affords safe anchorage for ships of any burden at a short distance from the shore, with convenient landing. The climate is mild and temperate, not being visited by fog9, frosts, or heavy rains ; and the sky is often so clear as to afford a prospect of Cape Albion, 50 miles distant, on the coast of New Holland, Robinson raised culi- nary vegetables of all kinds, and his crops of wheat were very productive. Adjacent to the bay, there is an extent of not less than 30 miles o...

SUPREME COURT. [Newspaper Article] — Hobart Town Gazette — 1 July 1826

SUPREME COURT. Richard Richardson was charged with committing a violent assault upon the person of Robert Orford, on the high- way, near Clarence Plains, on the 16th of May last, and robbing him of a bundle of clothes. It appeared from the evi- dence that both Orford and Richardson had been partially affected by drink on the evening alluded to, the effects of which would probably be to inspire the one with a desire to commit the robbery, and would place the other in a situation to afford him an opportunity to do so. The Jury acquitted the prisoner. On the same day, John Strugnell was indicted for stealing, on the 19th of April, from Elizabeth Cable (the wife of the person now in gaol for sheep-stealing) in her dwelling-house, a ring, a broach, a pair of ear-rings, five dollars and a shirt; and Elizabeth Thomson was charged with receiving the same, knowing them to be so stolen. Strugnell was found guilty of stealing the shirt, and a verdict of not guilty was returned in favor of Eliz...
