WHO SHALL RULE? [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 July 1919

WHO shall rule ? The following letter addressed , to the Editor of the 'Daily Mail' appeared in that journal's . 'Columns on the 8th instant:— . ?'?'???....? Sir,^ Permit me to unload a little more anent the Townsville eruption, which seems to be far from the subsiding point as yet, de spite the reported assurance of the Premier that all - is quiet. The issue of the Northern - ?strike is not the removal of 'scabs,' or better conditions, or higher wages; it has. simply re solved into a struggle between union officials .and the State Government as to who shall rule. If, as alleged, Inspector Kenny bargains with the strikers over, the return of firearms looted from some of the stores, offering to release Carney and Kelly on bail if 'the stolen arms . . -and ammunition were handed over to the Police Department, then it would appear as if ? - the Townsville magistrate's refusal to grant ? : bail: has been flouted and a grave breach of. the ' law committed by an official paid, to' preserv...

Gone West. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 July 1919

Gone West. Behind the reddened waters, and the land, The sun is sinking grandly to his rest; And,* watching him, we come to, understand, He's but 'Gone West.' - ? To-morrow's dawn will bring him back again;' A thousand birds will greet him with-a -song, And thus once more triumphantly he'll reign . O'er right and wrong. Across the reddened- land and tossing waves, A thousand birds will greet him with their flight; N Some speak of joy's return, and some of -graves, In other lands to-night. And some bear words of our unshrouded' dead,' That on the battle field have found their rest ; That we think of them their last 'good-bye' was said, . ? But they're 'Gone West.' 'Gone, West,' the glory and the pride of youth; The wisdom and experience of age;. Counting life's losses a gain, in very, truth, . To keep our heritage. ?With morning's dawn they'll not return again, The rising sun will not disturb their rest, But we will 'carry on' in j oy or pain, ; For those 'Gone West.'

OUR CRITIES. Standard's Frank Admission Labour Leaders not to be trusted. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 July 1919

©ur eRiTies- ' 'Standard's Frank Admission Labour Leaders not to be trusted. The visit of Capt. Carmichael had th« effect of rallying round the Returned Soldiers and - Citizens' Political E'ederation a large number of public-spirited men and women, brought in a crop of enquiries from all parts of the State and numerous requests to start branches of the Federation in various' electorates. It -likewise elicited much comment and criti / cism of sorts from the Queensland Press. Thus one of our Brisbane dailies raised, a wail that the soldier-citizen movement for clean politics will break up the solidarity of the ? National forces. This is. as it may be. Our contention is that if there, is a thing that honesty may hurt, then ?. we? may as well be rid of it. The National party arrogated to itself the name 'National.' Does it represent the nation? Speaking at. a meeting held in the Wesley Church School, Princess Street, Maree electorate, on the 13th of June last, which ? . 'meeting was cal...

A Billion a Year from the Air. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 July 1919

[?] C (By ROBERT G. SSKERRETT. ) . ' v \ A billion 'a^^ar ifrom the air I 'No, it is not a blue-sky minmgscheme, but a thoroughly practicable proposition jmd a national economic necessity. In short, the purpose is to imprison free nitrogen— -the. product to serve our farm lands in times of peace, and, during periods of hostilities, to aid us in the manufacture of munitions for national defence. The public has heard a good deal during the past about the chemistry of warfare, and, to . those that have heeded what has been said and c written, it 'must be plain* how large a part nitric acid plays in the preparation of explo sives and military propellants for all sorts of ordnance. Most of the nitric acid used is ob tained by treating sodium nitrate, commonly ' called. £hile saltpeter, which comes to us from . the arid, barren region in Chile lying between the Pacific Coast and the foothills of the Andes* . WELCOME HOME. [Newspaper Article] — The Leader — 1 July 1919

WELCOME HOME. The Returned Soldiers' and . Citizens'' Politi cal Federation had recently _ the pleasure to welcome home two of their old- and esteemed workers in the persons of Messrs. *D. Dads worth and W. Worley. In an interview with these two gentlemen (who we might -mention were far too reticent to give us much news of themselves), we learned much of the great possibilities of the glorious Islands of '-the Line, especially of the late German New Guinea, where both of them served with the Tropical Forces of the A.I.F. v Mr. Wadsworth, who, by the way, previously also served on the other side, appears cer tainly none the worse after the strenuous time ' _ spent in the tropics. He is .one of the founda tion members of the Federation and a deal of 'praise is . due to him for his past energetic _work in connection with the soldiers' move ments. . : ? , The tropics left their mark on Mr. Worley. We trust, however, that Queensland's bracing winter climate and the whole-hearted welcome ...
