GOONDIWINDI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) May 7. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 14 May 1864

GOONDIWINDI. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT) May 7. The robbers of the mail, as I informed you in       my last, have been taken, and are now in the lock up here, awaiting trial. They have already had a hearing, or rather they were brought for-   ward, but were remanded for further evidence. They seem to care very little for the conse-     quences awaiting them. The boy robber, who     looks to be about sixteen, laughs at the idea of   punishment and says he knows he will get off       with five years or so on account of his youth.   The other, an old man, seems less confident, but they both conduct themselves in a manner far from penitent, and threaten in infamous language vengeance on their captors. The case of the man Robertson has also been put back for further evidence. nothing woitli mentioning m oin limited cncle...

THE CULTIVATION OF THE SUGAR CANE IN QUEENSLAND. SELECTION OF LAND. [Newspaper Article] — The Brisbane Courier — 14 May 1864

TBE CULTIVATION OF THE SUGAR CANE IN QUEENSLAND. I SEWCTIOK OF LA.'.'J). Ik the selection of land for a sugar plantation core should be taken that tho soil is adapted for the purpose, as chiefly on this will depend the quantity of saccharine matter. The yield on the most favorablo soils, which I «vii 1 describe, to be doublo that of calcareous, marl, or sandy soils. 1. The plantation should be on an incline if possible, or on a high level, so that it will not be subject to swamping, and will not require much drainage. 2. Black clay is the most suitable as it will retain the moisture much longer than any other. 3. Alluvial soil from 12 to 14 inches on clay is also very good. 4. Rich alluvial soil is good, but cones grown in this soil havo not hold in tho ground Btilllcicnt to withstand strong winds ¡as they grow «cry »oft in this soil the strong «vhids are likely todo much dumago to them. Low lands I should much object to as they may moro or less bo swampy ¡ an overflowing of tho lau...

Atttb on adjournment of one week to permit the Attorney-General and certain hon. members to pay a professional visit to Ipswich, the Legis- lative Assembly met on Tuesday last. By many it was supposed that it would be a poli- tical field day, and the strangers' galleries were '. well filed. The only question of importance, however, which was" decided, was one by the Speaker, which affeded both sides of the House, inasmuch as it declared that the manner in , which several bil« had been introduced into the House at its last sittings was inlormah Conse- quently they had to" be discharged from the Whether from a feeling of disgust on the part of hon. members, or from a desire on that of the government, in consequence of the ab- sence of several of their supporters.
