CORRESPONDENCE. NARRACAN SHIRE ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 12 August 1880

CORRESPONDENCE. NARRACAN SHIRE ELECTION. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. Smu,--Tour article of Thursday last, ad vocating the return of Hr. Wright on the grounds of his business training and infol,. ence at, the quarter where we have long been looking with wistful eyes, will doubt. less exercise a good effect, and, I trust, isake that gentleinan's return doubly sure. I should, however, like to call upon the se lectors of Waterloo to show that they fully appreciate the attention that Cr. Vary has shown, by his repeated responses to invita tions to that town, and the unvarying sup port lie has given its representatives. . Mr. Dumaresq may bca very good man, but I do not fancy his chance on the pre sent occasion ; and Mr. Stewart's views on fencing will leave him on the wrong side of the poll ; so that if the weather is fine, and the roads quite dry (P). that the ratepayers mnuy roll up, then the following aill be the result :--Varey,. 330 ;Wright, 250 ;.Miller, 230.--Yours, &c....

THE AUGUST ELECTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 12 August 1880

THE AUGUST ELECTIONS. The ratepayers of the colony have to-day to decide who shall be their representatives at the local council tables. The Shires of Buln Buln, Narracan., and Traralgon have more iuterest for our readers and ourselves than sill the others, so we confine our remarks to them. In the Buln Bulu Shire a slight change has taken place. but nothing that will interfere with the return of three members for each riding. In the South-eastern riding MJr. Ditterich decided lhte on Thurs day last to withdraw from the con test; but owing to his inability to get his nominators to consent to such a proceeding on his part, he is in duty bound to go to the poll. This will have the effect of placing Mr. Galla gher stild Mr. Brooker on almost an even footing, and will, we fear act materially against Mlr. Ditterich, as the information given to us last week has, long ere this, been circulated throughout the entire riding. But all we can do in fairness to all is to say that MIr. Ditterich ...

MARTIN CHERRY'S DEATH. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 12 August 1880

MARTIN CHERRY'S DEATH. This event is thus referred to by a correspolnent of the Benalla Stan- dard; -- "The Press and the public scorn to be in doubt how Martin Cherry came by his death at Glen- rowan, I was one that was in .the house at the time, and I will endeavor to show how it occurred, When the police arrived at Glenrowan, they commenced to fire into the dwelling from all directions. The bullets came thick and fast like showers of hail. Each of us endeavored to protect our selves as well as we could, some under beds, others on the floor. I took re- fuge among some bags of grain. I could occasionally hear bullets strike and bury themselves in the bags of grain behind which I was sheltered. As the bullets continued. to pour in among us I heard some person cry out, 'For God's sake, come here; I am shot.' I recognised Martin Cherry's voice. I immediately ran to his asssistance, and I found him bleed- ing from a wound he had received in the groin. I pulled a sheet from off a bed, a...

MORWELL. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 19 August 1880

IMO tWELL. (rnot OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) A largely attended meeting was held on Saturday evening at Mur dock's Cricketers' Hotel, Morewell, to take steps to co-operate with the Mir boo Railway League in the endeavor to obtain railway extension to that district. The chair was taken by E. Kelleher, Esq., J.P., who briefly ad dressed the meeting, and said he was glad to see such a large and tho roughly representative meeting of the resident ratepayers of the district, as it clearly showed the interest that was taken in the morvelentt. It was one that, in his opinion, affected every in dividual residing in the large, fertile, but much neglected territory ; and he hoped that the meeting would, by its unanimity, make such a dem(tostra tion as would not only encourage the people of Mirboo, but would also show the present Ministry the absolute ne cessity that existed for railway comn municatior with this district. Mr. S. Vary, J. P.. then moved, "That this meeting do resolve itself into a l...

BULN BULN SHIRE COUNCIL. ELECTIOX or PRESIDENT. Much interest was felt in the first meeting of the new Shire Council, which took place at I)rouin on Mon day last. Before ten o'clock the whole of the conneillors were assembled, and earnestly engaged in arranging for the election of President.
