HOOLIGANISM AT ELECTION MEETINGS. [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 30 March 1910

HOOLIGANISM AT ELEC TION MEETINGS. THE hooliganism that is being indulged in by the Socialistic faction at the meetings of the Fusion candidates on the main land, particularly in Victoria and New South Wales, is a good indication of the depths to which these individuals are prepared to stoop in their efforts to attain their objective. Indeed, it demonstrates very clearly that common decency or ordinary decorum are unknown factors in the conduct of their political intrigues. The obvious deduc tion is that they recognise that they have no reasonably intel ligent reply to offer to the dis comfiting facts being stated by. their opponents, and have, therefore, decided to resort to vulgar abuse as a last resort. But it is a well-known axiom that abuse is no argument, and is only used when no other answer can be found, and gene rally by persons who ?.re either incompetent or unwilling to reason. Yet wb find thfiss r-.nrn- temptible tactics being eounr tenanced by the Labor Party in at leas...

HUON COACH BLOCKED. TREES ACROSS THE ROAD. All Shoulders to the Wheel, [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 30 March 1910

HTTON COACH BLOCKED, ,- TREES ACROSS THE ROAD. All Shoulders to the Wheel, Those who travelled by the early morning coach to Hobart on Saturday last had a some what eventful journey. The fires, which had been raging in various parts of the bush, and in some localities in close prox imity to the roadway, had gnawed into the hearts of many of the forest giants, thereby re lieving the settler, in cases where the land was occupied, of the necessity of felling a good portion of his timber. In all quarters large trees were to be heard crashing down the hillside, and - several found their resting-place across'the main road. Two of these monsters of the forest obstructed the roadway near Mr George Elliott's 'resid-_ ence, and in falling did consider-' able damage to the, telegraph wires and insulators. These, however, had been cleared frorn the track when the early coach passed along on Monday, and for the time being the mails - progress was interrupted. .a.s tne coacn spea on its way round...

Current Topics. FALLEN FRUIT. [Newspaper Article] — Huon Times — 30 March 1910

Current Topics. FALLEN FRUIT. - In view of the heavy consign ments of fruit being exported to Australian and foreign mar kets; the orchardists' employees are being kept at high pressure in the work of picking. Good progress has been made in this regard, and on Friday last the amount of fruit removed from the trees was, perhaps, a record for the season. But the pickers, were not wholly responsible for this ; Nature did her part. In many quarters the high -wind that was blowing literally brought the fruit, not ably pears, down in showers, there being instances where every particle of fruit was blown from the trees. This means con siderable financial loss to those affected.
