The Pioneer. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21. 1895. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 December 1895

(Tbc |1iouccr. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21. 189f>. Christum, slide in , christmastide. every community in Christendom is a season of festivity. Ordinary busi ness operations are suspended as far as possible and the momentous ques tions of the day are temporarily laid aside so that the mind may lie given up unfettered to social enjoyment. The family re-unions, the freedom from the cares of everyday lift*, the holiday cheer all combine to make people, no matter to what creed they belong, more susceptible of kindly influence, " The most urgent matters of pressing importance of course re quire that attention their bearing upon individuals and the community generally demands. But at this period of the year everything that can be postponed till after the holidays is left to take-its course. The divergence of climate between our fatherland and Australia makes the observance of Christmas somewhat different^ h§r@ to -.what it is in England. But the festivities are noiie the less..«iijoyed in th...

OUR ILLUSTRATIONS, [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 December 1895

OUR ILLUSTRATIONS, Through the kindness of Mr. N. B. M'Kay, of the Mil Jura Cultivator, we are enabled to fulfil our promise,,with regard to illustrations. The blocks were forwarded by the Corowa, which stuck for a day on her down stream trip on Morna Reef, not .arriving in Renmark till early this morning. In consequence of her late arrival we can only find room for two pictures. The smaller illustration is of a typi cal settler's residence, that of Mr. Tod-Mercer, of Mildura, of whose es tate Mr. W. P. Douglas is the manager. The larger pi : :: :>.•.,<» a typical scene, a picnic 011 ilw A unay. The .spot sk; is in liue vieuity of Mil dura, but there are plenty of places of a like character near Renmark and the view will give the friends of Ren mark settlers a good idea of our river scenery. The nlhrr illnfitra.iions will appear in an curly ir-suc; iji January.

FRUIT STEALING IN THE SETTLEMENT. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 December 1895

FRUIT STEALING IN THE SETTLEMENT. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—As an intending settler I feel I am justified in expressing iny feelings re garding the above crime which is so pre valent in the settlement. Last Sunday on two blocks near to where I am staying, viz :—Sanderson's and Anderson's blocks, it was absolutely disgraceful to see the open wa.v the people carried off the fruit, among the said people being members of a family who are, I-am told, a "leading" (?) family here. It seems incredible that so called 'respectible' settlers will enter a fellow setter's block and rob him, merely because he is an absentee, which should, I am of opinion, rather be ail incentive for settlers to protect his interests instead of taking the lead in robbing him ! I am only sorry that I have not yet taken up my land and could call myself a 'settler' in order that I might send the names of the thieves home to the absentees and have them summarily dealt with as they deserve. I am sure every right minded land ...

CORRESPONDENCE. CLASSING RAISINS. TO THE EDITOR. [Newspaper Article] — Renmark Pioneer — 21 December 1895

CORRESPONDENCE. CLASSING RAISINS. TO THE EDITOR. Sir.—As a great deal of controversy has been going on regarding the stemming and grading of our raisin crops. I would likf to say a few words on the subject. 1 was asked by a great many people here to find out from our friend, Mr. It. Hoops, in Mildura, liow the matter wms worked there. He kindly promised, when he was here a few weeks ago, to make all en quiries on liis return to Mildura. In a letter from hiiu lie says as fol lows :— " I have had several conversa tions with members of the boards of the various packing companies here, and also with the Secretary of the Planters' Union, Mv. It. E. Fiiilav, and noue of them had even heard of such a notion as the wav you class the raisins in Renmark. Mr. Finlay says it was never done in that wax here, but the first year it was classed by the expert in the sweat boxes, and that was 'after grading,' and none of those 1 j have spoken to here believe it can be done ] with any precision in the ...
