Social Reform Bureau. Under the auspices of the above a public meeting was held in tlio Leongatha Hall on Monday, 30th March, when the president (the Rev. Jas. Jackson) presided. The chief item on the programme was a lantorn lecture entitled " The Story of Aieohol." This was givon by the Rev. W. Seamor, who, in an address, slatod that Sir F. Treves, a scientist, had doscribod it as "an insidious poison," and Professor Osborno (Molbourno University) had stated that it was " a nar cotic poison." It was created by the decomposition or rotting of moist sugar. " Alcohol is putri fh'd sugar," said Dr Ridge. In teresting slides showed the wine making process. In grapes the sugar was already prosent, and only neod contact with the air to bo changed into alcohol and cabonic acid gas. Quips and Quiddites of the Wan in the Street. [Newspaper Article] — Foster and Toora Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 9 April 1914

Quips and Quiddites of the Wan in the Street. (BY PODARGUS.) Whilst sitting oil the top rail of McCartin's sale yards indulging in Nature Study of tho Cow, I heard a parental looking old dodger say, " No, I'm sending thom to a private school because there is too much 'tommy roC about State schools nowadays.*" As I wasn't a " buyer," nor yet a "seller," 1 got down from my perch, and being " chummy " with the boys, I set out to find what this "tommy rot" amounted to from a practical standpoint. Tho. (irst "candidate" was asked if he knew where Timbuctoo was situated, and tho reply was, " Dunno; never hoard of the bally place." Inquiry as to tho whereabouts of Chicago, Calcutta and Coleraine led to similar re sults. No. 2 was asked what, caused the tides to rise and fall. I was informed " The wind, of course; what'd you think?" No. 3 claimed to be a '' dab " at brush work. He was asked to name the primary colors, but could only conclude that they were " the colors you put on first.' Ha...

Decentralisation. [Newspaper Article] — Foster and Toora Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 9 April 1914

:,,"v . > A " .. Decentralisation. * TO thofie svlio watch affairs in Victoria the present outlook in dicates serious ; rouble ahead. Not since the perkl of the great land boom of 25 years ago has there been such a congestion of the life of the State at the centre. | Notwithstanding the Govern ment has been attempting to do for the country districts the people are steadily leaving rural for city industries. The exten sive irrigation schemes which wore to do so much are not all what they have been cracked up to be, and the mo >ey laid out on them is now not worth twenty shillings in the pound. All this seems quite natural when one re flects on the manner in which the whole State is run by and for the benefit of the people of Melbourne. Half of the population of the State is grouped round the meeting place of Parliament, and personal influence is still an im portant factor in our political life. The man on the spot always has an advantage over the man who is far away. This fact,...

WRECKERS OF MEN AND NATIONS. The Smile and the Wile of Woman. [Newspaper Article] — Foster and Toora Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 9 April 1914

WRECKERS OF MEN AND NATIONS. The Smile and the Wile of Woman. Empires have fallen before the wiles of woman. Rome sang of the achievements of Antony. Antony look ed into the eyes of Cleopatra and laid down honor and life. Louis XV. dallied with the Pompa dour and Du Barry until his kingdom tottered. The royal roue died and left his grandson and heir a heritage of death. Mary Stuart played at love with many men until she lost her throne and at last her head. These women have been the lure that led men to destruction. They baffled scientists and sociologists. By all the rules of the game they should have been wholly creatures of evil. Some were, il?ut that others of them were warm-hearted, impulsive and be witching to good and bad people alike is a puzzle to alienists. When face to face with the lives of these wreckers af the world, scientists hold up their hands, shake their heads and say: "We cannot tell you about it-may be some day we can, but not now; it is too much to expect us t...

DREAMS AND DREAMERS. [Newspaper Article] — Foster and Toora Mirror and South Gippsland Shire Advocate — 9 April 1914

DREAMS AND DREAMERS. There are st'.'.l, even in Uiis enlight eaed age, a number of supers! i'lous individuals who attach a moaning to certain dreams, :>i :i WHO will tagerJy refer to books on she K':bj.?ct, in older that they may ascertain the purport of some nocturnal reverie that is prob ably the outconu o£ a bad digestion.
