Faith. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

Faith. Many persons worry as to their faith. . It is trust in God and man. It business it is con fidence. It is belief that all is right and safe and acting accordingly. When faith was lost a year or two past panic began — runs on banks were inaugurated, loans were called in and failures were frequent Confidence was gone, and many who were really solvent were whelmed with bankruptcy. To the true Jew the lesson is, lose nob thy faith, fail not in thy trust in God, for He is for thee, even when there is no light and no possibility of forseeing and avoiding danger, and in Him it is p rfectly safe to confide. Every man tal es good care that his neighbor shall not cheat him After a time he begi* s to he concerned lest he cheat his neighbor. Then all goe-i well. What do your Children Read ? [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

What do your Children Read ? Do you know ? You know what they eat, and are careful to provide the right food and plenty of it. But do you know, parents, what your children read ? Do you take pains to know what they read and provide them with the right kind of reading matter, and plenty of it ? Has it ever occurred to you that to be in different in this respect, or to deny your children good reading matter, is to starve them menta'ly, or perhaps poison them V Parents never think of starving their children physically. To poison them or starve them would be inhuman Is it less inhuman to starve them mentally ?

Social and General. Miss Ethel Benjamin, L.L.B., the first lady lawyer in Australia, has won her first case. Miss Benjamin's courage was not very severely tried in facing the Bench, as the case was undefended. We have no doubt the result would have been equally satisfactory if the best Bar in New Zealand had been retained. The ' Baron de Hirsch Memorial Aid Society ' is now in active operation. A num ber of small loans have been granted to very deserving cases during the week. The Conl Rilttee niQ anxious 'g secure the services of gome Jewish, young ladies as honorary collectors. Social and General. Memorial Service at the Great Synagogue. ADDRESS BY REV. J. H. LANDAU. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

Social and General. Memorial Service at the Great Synagogue. Address by Rev. J. H. Landau. Last Sunday afternoon at 4.30 p.m., a memorial Service was held at the Great Synagogue, Castlereagh st , Sydney. The attendance of adults was very limited, but a very fair number of children attended. The Rev. A. D. Wolinski read the Mincha Service, the Rev. J. H. Landau reciting several Psalms in English. The acting head master of the Hebrew school, Mr. M. A Cohen, B. A., read II Chapter II Kings. The Rev. J. H. Landau then addressed the cnildren, ana mournea witn them on the loss of their late Head Master, Mr. Louis Pulver, and conveyed to them the sentiments of a message which he felt their departed friend would have wished them to heed. He exhorted them to remember the kind acts of their late teacher, and strive by every means to be worthy examples of his teaching and training. The children then repeated a prayer recited by the Rev. J. H Landau. The services were concluded by the choir sin...

Dr. Herlz on the Zionist Congress. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

Dr. Hertz on the Zionist Congress. Dr. Herlz, in. the Contempornry Review^ com ments on his own Zionist Congress at Basle in ..an-'-'artic'.e- full of hope and confidence, with many flashes of satire upon opponents. He first' postulates the necessity to the Jews throughout the world of some such work as his; and if he had convinced his brethren o\ this necessity they would probably agree to many of his' conclusions which have not won general acceptance He defines a nation as a Historical'1' group of human ..beings, of evident kinship, held together by their common enemy, and claims on that ground the right for the Jews to be considered a nation. But further argument on this point is now, he observes, unnecessary. At the Basle Congress, the Jews demonstrated in word and deed their unmis takable nationality. Only Jews themselves have denied that fact, and none had a right to speak for others. ' Mr. A or Mr. B, is not a Jew. Excellent! (tn certain cases very excellent for us.) But ther...

A Hundred Years from Now. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

A Hundred Years from Now. Thesurging sea of human life For ever onward rolls, - And bears to the eternal shore Its daily freight of souls ; . Though braverly sails our bark to-day, Pale death sits at the prow, And few shall know we e\er lived ? A hundred years from now. ? Why should we try so earnestly, In life's short narrow span. On golden stairs to climb so high Above our brother man ? Why blindly at on earthly shrine In slavish homage bow 1 Our gold will rust, ourselves be dust, A hundred years from nov;. ; 'O~ patient hearts, that meekly bear Your weai'j ioad of wrong ! O earnest hearts, that bravely dare, And, striving grow more strong ! Press on till psrf ect peace is won ; You'll never dream of how You struggled o'er life's thorny . road A hundred years from now. Earth's empires rise and fall, O Time ! Like breakers on thy shore ! They rush upon thy rocks of doom, G-o down and are no more ; The starry wilderness of worlds That gem night's radiant brow Will light the skies fo...

A Rabbi Called. [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

A Rabbi Called. The Rev. J. Leonard Levy, associate Rabbi to Dr. Joseph Krauskopf, of Philodelphia, has received and declined a call to a leading church in one of the largest cities in Scotland. The church, which stands for advanced and liberal doctrines in religion, was originally a United Presbyterian Church, in charge of a pastor who was suspected of heresy. At his death, accord ing to the report with which Dr. Levy made the announcement to the world, he was suc ceeded by a young preacher of even greater breadth, and the congregation divided owing to his heterodoxy. The liberals built a magnifi cent church, and its leader has now to give up * his charge owing to failing health. These facts were communicated to Dr Levy (so the interview says) by a letter from a Scotchman, who made the proffer of the pulpit at a con siderably higher salary than the Rabbi receives in Philadelphia, which is about 5000 dollars annually. Dr Levy accounts for the extra ordinary offer by recalling the fa...

The Prejudice Against Hebrews [Newspaper Article] — The Hebrew Standard of Australasia — 26 November 1897

The Prejudice Against Hebrews The best answer to the unfounded prejudice manifested against the Hebrew race by the ignorant, and even by many who have had the benefit of an enlightened training and education, is the progress which Hebrews have made since the comparatively recent period when they were admitted to an equal chance in public life with their fellow men. In the field of statenianship, of letters of finance, Hebrew names are among the most brilliant of the century, and even the enemies of the race have been compelled to bow to the splendour of its achievements. To-day all over all the world Hebrews are to be found representing the highest forms of intellectual energy, and en gaged in the most extensive and successful business enterprises- The mannerisms and the peculiarities which have been unjustly assigned by traditional caricature to the Jewish race are disappearing, and our Hebrew fellow citizens, as a rule, compare mo^t favourably with those who display narrow prejudi...
