LOCAL CHOIRS. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 13 January 1917

. OUAL CHOIRS. S Irieada very interestiig article nyour last issue on I The power of mu sic,. :by W.Y.M'., in which li regrets that h has never. been asked to join a local-choir; I. 'have nlot the pleasure of thi gentleman's acquaintance, but from the musical knowledge that he displays in writing of Wagner, Mozart and Beet hoven, he should consider himself fortu nate that: he does not belong to a local choir.. His ability -would not be appre :ciated;and, he-would have some novice pitting his parochial knowledge against his: of La Scala fame. My experience of country choirs is that it is a nice little training groundfor amateurs, where dis cussion of good music is very limited. I must admit that occasionally one meets a singer above the average in country choirs, but do they enjoy it ? You don't want honor in that direction.-Yours, &c., TENOR SOLO.

SHIRE BALANCE-SHEET. [Newspaper Article] — Heidelberg News and Greensborough, Eltham and Diamond Creek Chronicle — 13 January 1917

SHIRE BALANCE-SHEET. Sir,-I have been trying to make something out of the balance-sheet, pub lished in your last issue, but confess that an ordinary layman would get very much mixed with such an array of figures. However, in looking over the general rate statement, I notice that the total arrears of Fairfield riding are £212/16/2 out of a total of £413/13/3 for the whole shire. It seems passing strange that they should be so much behind, and I would like to ask how it is that we are in that unfortunate position, and who is resposible for it ?-Yours, &c., Fairfield, 9/1/17. PAY UP. Attention is drawn to Mrs Bolger's adver- tisement re dressmaking made easy. - The friends of Mr and Mrs Barkway of Heidelberg, will be sorry to hear of the death of their son Ernest,. which occurred on Thursday, from consumption, at the age of 23years.
