It seemed an eternity - to him be fore he saw the red glow abovo the funnels of the Christabel, and knew that the firemen were at work. Ho had given the order- for the yacht to sail immediately J osopli answered his ring, and soon the bruit of an imme diate departure awakened the sleep ing ship. "It was just like the Governor," the men said. Tho sl;tipper, a dour Scotchman, by naino Jracdowell, had sailed with Hugh too long that any caprice should surprise iiini. Meanwhile, in tho saloon, the four played on unconscious of tho amaz ing happening. A hissing of steam did bring .Jack Howies to the quar ter deck when lie was dummy; but it ■never occurred to his obtuse intelli gence that tho activity aboard was unwonted, and he reported nothing to Hie others. Postage Stamps. [Newspaper Article] — Birchip Advertiser and Watchem Sentinel — 1 April 1914

Postage Stamps. It is surely about time the Post master-General took sonic notice of the complaints made regarding the inferior quality of the gum used on postage stamps. The failure of the stamps to adhero to letters and other postal articles has caused much an noyance, particulaily in business houses, and it. is by no means an in frequent occurrence for the stamps to be regummed before they are able to be used. The complaints were first made in connection with the " kan garoo '' penny stamp, and the postal officials then promised that, an im provement would be effected by the use of cheaper, but apparently better paper for the purpose. The im provement has, however, not "taken place, and complaints are now being received to the effect that the now King's head penny stamps are even Jiss adhesive than their predecessors.

Autlibr of "A.B.C. of Rational - Manuring," vA.U.C. of Scientific Stock Feetling Uuilcr Australian Conditions," • Etc., Etc. I The prevention of soil exhaustion and the maintenance of soil fertility are interdependent, the one being the logical outcome of the other. But modern agricultural science "goes fur ther, and aims to increase fertility in order to securo permanent in crease in yields of; produce. This can only be achieved under the special Australian conditions of soil and cli mate by rational manuring. The time has now arrived when an in crease in the average yield of wheat per acre of the land devoted to its cultivation is absolutely essential to continued prosperity, and the in crease must bo regular, not spas modic. This Increase is easily pos sible, and undonlably profitable, u,. der conditions even below average. The new method tends itself to e...
