It transpired that a man naamed Ahbbott-a decent, inoffensive person, so it is said - hart neoasion to prosecut.e certain persons at the local court, with the resu't he was looked upon with contempt. On Monday all hands assembled at the works, as usual, when the men refused point blank to fill Ablbott's dray. Cathkin. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 December 1908

Cathkin. -- 4-- (From our own Correspondent.) A mock bnoquet was held in the State school at Cathkin, on Thursday week. under the auspfces of the Cathkin Mutual Improvement Society, and to mark the wind-up of a successful season. Though ostensibly "mock,"a profusion of poultry, salads, jellies, and such like good things gave a touch of realism to the entertain. ment, which was much ap;,reciated by those present. The thibles, which were artistically laid and tastefully decorated by the ladies of the society, presented a pleasing, one might say an alluring pic ture, and quite bore out their promising appearance as the night wore on. After the toast of " The King" had been drunk with musical honors, an attractive programme was opened by an organ solo given in Mr F. E. Boyd's best style. Mr A. Duun was heard at his best in " The Windmill," and as an encore "In Friendship's Name." Miss E. Auld was much appreciated in " O Song Divine," for which she received a vigorous recall, and again d...

Alexandra & Yea Standard NEC TEMERE NEC TIMIDE. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1908. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 December 1908

lnxatdra & ýqa ýt andaqj NEC TEMRII NEC TIMIDY FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1908. WariLs the political life of the State is in a parlous way, we may well draw attention to the fact that in municipal control it is no less so, And, in this connection, we need not go outside of Alexandra for an Iexample. Whene we speak of repre. sentative government we usually mean *vhat the term expresses, repre sentation of the people whose in. terests are directly concerned. Can it honestly be said that this is the state of att'irs in respect to the shire council Z And why, is it that the town ratopayers are not represented on that council.? The answer, is not far to find. It is because the rate payers thenselves are content to let things go in the same old way, neither advancing o; retreating, "marking time "; they are content to lot things go and pass their existence in the same sleepy easy going manner as they have for some years past. One would have imagined that the adsent of the long deterred r...

Plain and Fancy Dress Ball at Thornton. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra and Yea Standard and Yarck, Gobur, Thornton and Acheron Express — 4 December 1908

Plain and Fancy Dress Ball at Thornton. Despite the warm and rather unpleasant weather experienced on the 6th inst, the above ball, held. under the aus pice. of the Thornton Oricket Club, prnve a"decided success. The hall was well filled and presented a gay appearance. The number and superior class of the fancy dresses worn added greatly to the success of the gathering. Although the evening was rather too warm to indulge too freely in the "light fantastic," there was, nevertheless, no abatement in the vigour usually exhibited at a Thornton hall. Perhaps the most striking feature of the evening in the way of fancy dress was a Pierrot set, which carried off palm for their: unique and suitable costume. Portion of the proceeds will be set apart for the purchase of new matting both for the gents' and the ladies' cricket clubs. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies whilst the music was gratuitously supplied by Messrs Scorah Bros., Mtsses" Soorah and Gilmore and several others. Th...
