Northern Territory Bulletin PROPOSED CIVIC COMMITTEE IN DARWIN [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 19 July 1947

Northern Territory Bulletin PROPOSED CIVIC COMMITTEE I IN DARWIN I A preliminary meeting was j held in the Administrator's office i cm Thursday. 10th July, to discuss tne formation of a civic committee or progress association in Darwin. Representatives of various organ - , jsations in the town attended and expressed then views in this con nection. The R.S.L. representative, Mr. A. Brough Newell, considered that as the proposed committee would apparently have no legislative, administrative or executive pow ers, it would seem that it may be rather a waste of time. Mrs. A. R. Miller, President of the C.W.A., thought that just as much could be accomplished by each organisation approaching the Administration direct, as by form in g a separate committee. The majority of representatives present, however, considered that some form of joint committee was desirable in order to obtain a co ordinated opinion. Mr. Walker, of the N.A.W.U. ex pressed the view that the only way to get real public o...

HIGH-GRADE BULLS [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 19 July 1947

HIGH-GRADE BULLS — :o: — ? The Davis brothers, of Hamil ton Downs, always progressive, have once more advanced by im porting 25 high-grade bulls from the best of well bred stock. These bulls were bred by J. Walker, Kaluga, Narramine, New South Wales: D. and J. McLnrtv, Lone Pine Stud, New South Wales; and D. H. Robertson. Turanville, Scone, New South Wales. We wish to congratulate them on their courage and progressive ways. It is a darn long wav to truck bulls, but the Editor inspect ed them and found they had made the trip splendidly and arrived none the worse for their long journey.. Hamilton Downs is a first-class property that we should have no trouble in disposing of for Davis Bros., but, like a well known ad vertisement, they think when you are on a good thing, stick to it — and they are perfectly right. Any one in the Territory that has n good cattle property for sale, write the 'Central ian Advocate' we havei lots of enquiries.

MR. BLAIN [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 19 July 1947

MR. BLAIN In this issue is Mr. Blain's reply to our questions as to what has he done for the Territory. Just so long as he tries, that's something, still reading over his speeches, the word 'Truculent' is correct. We may be wrong, probably often are, but it appears to us that the method of telling your opponent oft' in~a most uncourteous way and then asking him to do a favor is wrong. We doubt if any of us after being called something .un complimentary and then being ask ed afterwards to grant a favor, would do it.1 Human nature would more likely take a much more drastic step. It certainly is un reasonable that our Member is not allowed a vote, because for this reason he must be classed as a nonentity, and his only other me thod is to be calm, speak the facts and hope for the best. He would possibly then get a certain amount of sympathy and also results. We are pleased that many of our ideas are in common, but that of water definitely is not, neither is that of his speech about wort...

STRANGE PLANTS OF THE TERRITORY [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 19 July 1947

STRANGE PLANTS OF THE TERRITORY As well as having1 some of the strangest animals and birds, North Australia has strange plants and shrubs.' There is one shrub which, again like the fuschia, grows on stony ground, and which ground pro duces little else. It is known out west as the Japanese fir. It grows only at most two- feet 'high, but has wide spreading branches that have leaves like any other fir tree. It is really a lovely shrub or tree, which ever you wish to call it, has beneatli a perfect shade and often harbors a guano oi* some of the small desert animal, like the buckaroo. As nature's method of helping the aboriginal this tree grows prolific roots in which the witchetty grub eats its way and provides for the abo a luscious and tasty morsel. This dwarf fir is lovely in design and would make, if it would sui*vive. a big seller in the southern market.

THE NIGHT PARROT [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 19 July 1947

THE NIGHT PARROT In the north-west of AusU'alia is the only, sample of the world's night parrot. It roams over only a hundred or so .square miles, say from thc! border of West Australia north-west from the Alice to ap proximately the bitumen road at Ti-Tree. It is peculiar that this is said to be the only .survivor 'in the world of this parrot and during the first visit of the King, when he was Duke of York, it is said that £450 was offered for a pair of these birds so that he could take them back to England. The Wanderer, who has lived for 15 years in the centre of where they breed has, during that time, only seen two alive, although the cats have at times brought a dead one in to serve as their breakfast. The two parrots seen did each night at about 9 p.m. come and feed together with hundreds of buckaroos below the Granites home and provided no shift was made continued to pick up the crumbs previously spread for their bene fit. Eventually their fears lessen ed and they become frie...
