The Value of Advice. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 16 July 1898

The Value of Advice. ".You always get plenty of advice because it dJean't cost anything, and consequently isn't of any value," Thus say many cynical people with whom the world has not gone very well, But cynies frequently make mistakes in forgetting that exceptions prove the rule. The advice of tine friend to an other is sometiftes of inestimable value. Mr. Tate, rf Ithica Cottage, Illawarra Road, Marrickvillej has proved the truth of the remark, " was suffering fearfully from influenza and its after effects," he says. "A friend recommen ded me to take Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People; I did so, and am now completly cured, After thirty years immunity from trouble, influenza gripped me pretty tight. Without warning, I suddenly became ill, I always had a firat-clans: appetite i it left me altogether. Positively.I could eat nothing at all. Robbins, for grubbing and 'ringing, wme to be in by Monday,-25th inet. NusaRous complaints have reached us lately of` the manner in whi?l several dogs, the property of inoflen?. sive residents of the town, have been' destroyed with the means generally adopted by the "canine poisoner." For what means, or what object; the' individual has in ruthlessly ending the. existence of these dumb brutes, which. are kept about a house chiefly as a favorite, it is difficult to conceive,:bu. certain it is, as a thief cometh in the night, so can we liken he, who, under the canopy of heaven's darkness, or behind the veil "of obscurity , sallies forth in his work " of death. An Interview With Mr Gladstone, o---- A corres1 ol.dent wiltes iLD-" io ce had the honor oot an interview with the illustrious state:man whose lifelong t olitical enemies now vie with his followers to do, all posaib!e post-mortem respect. to him. I can under stand all of this from having reali ed in that conversation of over 20 minutes the marvel lous chalm of that great man's personality. I had been invited to-become secretary of a society initiated by soldiers' fliends to pro mote the abolition of flogging in the army. We had formed a commit:ee and had held a deinonstration in Hyde Park.-- Mr Gladstone had written 'a Lost card, which I read at the meeting, indicating sympathy with the ob ects of this society. I accordingly waited upon the right honotable gentleman at his residence in Harley-street next mnorning, and after a plaley .with the servant, who did his best to prevent any interview, I finally, learned that the great man- would see me. WIT AND HUMOUR. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 23 July 1898

WIT AND HUMOUR. A well-known surgeon was performing a diflicult operation at one of hospitals the other day, when the patient suddenly died. 'Now,' said the surgeon to the assembled students, ' I will show you, gentlemen, how I should have complcted the operation had the unfortunate patient not succumbed.' A schoolmaster, hearing one of his scholars read, the boy, when he came to the word 'honor,' pronounced it in full. The master told him that it should le pronounced without the 'h,' as. thus, 'onour.' 'Very well, sir,' replied the. lad; '1 will remember it in the future.' 'Aye,' said the-master, "always droi.'t he 'h.' ' The next morning, the master's tea and hot muffin was brought to, die desk; abut the duties of his vocation made him wait until it was cold, whell, addressing the same boy, he told him to take it to the fire and heat it. ' Yes, sir,: replied the scholar; and taking it to fire, ate it. Presently the master caled for his muffin. '1 eat it, as you bade me' said the b...

MINING NEWS. YARRA GLEN. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Advocate — 23 July 1898

MINING NEWS. YARRA GLEN. :- (From a Correspondent.) I hear that mining in this locality is likely: to be carried out in:a large way during the coming summer. ''.The "whole 'of the Steel's Oreek Valley, from where the shallow sink ing was so successfully carried on two years ago, right down to the boundary of the Yarra Glen racecourse, is pegged out in leases varying from '50 to over 100 acres in extent. One or two companies are already floated with a good capital, and are expected to commence extensive operations at once. The claim, which is now working in Mr. Black's paddock, and belonging to Mr. Shaw and party,- has been getting really good results; on the main lead it has given over loz. to the fathom. The-sinking is only about 50 feet, and the -water not very troublesome, a small engine m with an 18-inch lift easily keeping it dry. A battery is also about to ibe erected on the Hearty claim belonging' to Mr. uam Smith and party,- where' really good results have beren obtained, th...
