DISTRICT NEWS. (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS.) THE SETTLEMENT. [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 22 September 1904

I DISTRICT NEWS. I (FROM OUR CORRESPONDENTS.) THE SETTLEMENT j The heavy rains daring the hat few I I days have again caused all the d wins to swell, and several to overflow, with i | the result that a large area of lind is i I under water. Nothing further has I been heard regarding Mr. Caxrwon's visit. He will probably wait until: | summer time before inspecting the | swamp, and then wonder what wehave been complaining about. ! A very painful accident happened j to the little son of Mr. 0. Millet, of 1 the settlement, last week, the jitle> fellow's hand being severely injured ! by a chaff-cutter. Under the caw of Dr. Phelps he is progressing well, al though the injuries are of a serbua I character. I

For the Children. HOW HE HELPER MOTHER. [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 22 September 1904

For thi Children. HOW HE HELPER MOTHEB. j . 'Let us meet]here at a quarter to' seven and ,have) a moonlight coasting] party!" cried ITred. Baker. "We aU' have supper at six, and that will give us lots of time to get here." "I can't come until hall-past aeven," said Will Adams, after the boys had shouted a noisy assent. "I have to wash the supper dishes, and put the room to rights." There was a chorus of derision. Wash dishes - a boy wash dishes! Who ever heard of such a thing? s "I have," said Will quietly. "I know of three boys in the Hamilton Hotel who wash dishes three times a day." Oh, but they are paid for it." j "Well, do you mean - to aay you , would do for pay what you wouldn't ? i do to help your sick mother?"

The Maiden Aunt. [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 22 September 1904

I The Maiden Aunt. The popular notion of th<^ raider, aufft, as set forth in many short tales and .in comic illustrations, is an elderly woman with a sour visage afcd sour temper, a sharp tongue and a deeire I'd make everybody-jniaerabJe, The cause of; this acidulalion of (Usposi tdon is frequently supposed to.be an unhappy love affair. . Tihe truth of the matter is th&t the rhaiden aunt, instead of beicg detest ed, is beloved. Whatever may have been the case with the maiden aunt of past generations, her representa tive of the present day is a weir guest in all scarce nowadays! Look round among your own circle, ask your friends for their experience, and you will find that the children jump for joy when they hear that your unmarried sister, or sister-in-law, is about to pay you a visit. The ffcct that your children welcome her appearance is a safe in dication that she is a person of ami able qualities and very good-natured! A wise man once said: "Beware of the. man...

YARRAGON. [Newspaper Article] — The Yarragon, Trafalgar & Moe Settlement News — 22 September 1904

TARRAGON. The roads in and around Yarragon are said to be in a worse now than they have ©*cr been within the recollection of the proverbial "oldest inhabitant," and, taking the main street as an example, it is itfH difficult to believe the assertion. Per haps the council, when "preparing ,tUe estimates" will bear this in miud. The case of "hard swearing" at the Yarragon court last Thursday has lieen a topic of conversation ever since. It is said that another witness could have been produced, who would have strengthened the evidence for one j i side. Apropos of tlie court, a youngster whose ch'm scarcely reached the top of the witness box, gave some smart answers. "What.are youV" asked the solicitor. "My father's son," replied the lad. After correctly answering me questions concerning measure ments, the chairman of the bench In quired-"I suppose you ask your teacher questions about feet, yards, chains and miles?" "No we uou't,11 said the nipper; "he asks us the ques | tions." Several...
