Can the Public Win. [Newspaper Article] — Nathalia Herald and Picola, Narioka, Kotupna and Moira Advertiser — 28 April 1914

Can the Public Win. In proportion to its population, Australia devotes more time and money to horse-racing than any country in the world. It is the gambling element, of course, that sustains the racing to such* an ex tent, and in "Life" for May, just published, the question is discussed. "Has the general public that sup ports the racing a fair chance of - coming out on the right side in its tiansactions with the bookmakers?" G. M. Dash, who has had a very long and varied .acquaintance with racing, argues the question very closely, and produces a list of argu ments and examples to illustrate the felicitous logic of the race-course gambler. He analysis many of the systems and superstitions upon vhich the man-in-the-stieet specu lates his money, and shows how futile these are. Without in any way adopting the pulpit attitude, but merely as~a hard-headed busi ness man, he reiterates ''Punch's advice to those about to gamble, Don't."

CORRESPONDENCE. Wo do not hold ourselves responsible for the opinions expressed by our corres pondents.] . Tangye v Hornsby. TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—There is on old penny pieces an old motto, which put into English means, "Evil be to him who evil thinks." I do not propose to answer my brother Tuckett as King O'Malley might say, in detail. Every state ment I made in my' letter was the truth. This may be seen by the Press reports printed and by the notes of his speech ; Gr. Tuckett may have been overwhelmed with his own verbosity and have no dis tinct recollection of what he did say." My own notes and that of the re porter for the "Heiald," and the printed report of the "Leader," shows that he is wrong. Now as to commission—The case ai I under stand it, is, that on woiks of this kind, commission is not paid to-local agents. I actually knew nothing about the matter till the morning of the council meeting. It is just-as fair for me to say that Cr. Tuckett is getting a commission as for him ...
