NFL referees need help; instant replay is a necessity [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 3 December 1998

NFL referees need help; instant replay is a necessity Out Of Bounds JASONSNYDER If this past week in the National Football League isn't enough of a clue that instant replay and full time officiating is a necessity, then there needs to be some investigation of what the league officials are up to. Too often in the league's most crucial games, referees are making calls that they don't even see. It's getting to the point where the refs should just get in their little huddle and fli p a coin to determine which team gets the benefit of the call. But wait a minute...we've all witnessed that maybe even heads and tails are too complicated for a zebra. I've always tried to understand the point of view of referees and have always understood how difficult it must be to make all the right calls in the heat of the moment. We all have to admit that officiating is difficult and understand that a perfect game for an official in any sport is probably more difficult than a perfect game pit...

Lady Lions place third at Tip-off Tournament [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 3 December 1998

Lady Lions place third at Tip-off Tournament By Jason Snyder sports editor The Behrend women's basketball team got their season underway on a positive note at the Penn State Behrend Tip-Off Tournament held in Erie Hall on November 20 and 21. The Lions showed positive signs on their way to finishing in third place at the highly competitive tournament. The Lady Lions tipped off against Mount St. Joseph in the first round. Behrend entered the game with the disadvantage of not knowing much about their opponent. Coach Rosalyn Fornari commented on their opening round opponent saying, "they had a new coach and only three returning players on that team, so there wasn't much scouting to do. That was different for our players." The biggest surprise came in the form of Nadeana Stormer, a Division I transfer. Stormer scored a game high 27 points on 10-20 shooting. The Lions, however, kept the game close due to the play of Lisa Sanders and Jen O'Lare who scored 18 and 17 points, respecti...

Astronomy Open House: What was the Christmas Star? [Newspaper Article] — Behrend Beacon (1998-2010) — 10 December 1998

Astronomy Open House: What was the Christmas Star? Behrend science professor Robert Knacke discusses theories on Christmas star. by Sarah Edwards staff writer Over Christmas carols and cookies, Dr. Roger Knacke, Director of the School of Science, discussed the star of Bethleham at the astronomy series and how it actually might not be a star at all. Knacke said that in the Bible there are two accounts of J e s u s ' s birth, but only one of these accounts discusses the star. Matthew wrote his account in Greek and in Greek the meaning of the word star can be interpreted as any celestial event. Also, Matthew says that the star was moving. The reasons that Knacke feels that whatever happened during Jesus's birth was not a star is that a star would not be moving across the sky. Knacke narrows his theory of what the star could have been to either a comet or an alignment of the planets. The comet theory takes effect based on the theory that in 66 A.D. a comet appeared over ...
