It came very highly recommonded as a sugrr producing and forage plant, but haviDg a vivid recollection of many previous disappointments with new-f-mgled "notions," we concluded to test it cautiously, and very modeiately. In order, however, to give it A good trial, we distributed small parcels per mail to friends in various portions of Georgia and the adjoining States, and planted for ourselves only sevon or eight hills, in a poor spot in our garden. At first it came up liko grass or Egyptian Millet, and grew ofl slowly and weakly; but in a few weeks it began to shoot upward, and in three months attained the height of 8 or 10 feet, with largo ...

THE VAUBY FARMER DEVOTED TO THE TRUE INTEREST OP PARMBRS, MECHANICS, AND WORK8NG MEN. VALLEY FARMER. r Hm?""" A Plea for the'.Horse Cruelty of the Check Rein. The Buffalo Democrat publishes the following excellent article, and we copy it with the hope of accomplishing much good by it: It would be quite as sensible to bit and curb a hod carrier's head backward, by a strap buckling to the seat of his pantaloons, and to set him to carrying brick up a ladder in this hampered condition, as to brace a horse's neok towards his tail, as an aid in drawing a wagon or getting fast over the ground. Three things occurred to establish this stupid tyranny upon the horse, in England, we speak of. But one thing, was necessary to establish it in the United States that it was practiced in England. Notwithstanding our 4th of July, we are yet in a state of provincial servility to the fashions and foolish opinions of Britain, and we inevitably takejt he checkrein from them, as the sham democracy take free...
