TO HOPE. Gentle Lope, celestial Jove, Source of mildnes, truth and loveWhen the breast is rack'd with care, Thou with comforts rich art there. When despair's relentless reign Ken.ts the throbbing heart with pain; Then my peaceful, su.iny ray Breaks the cloud and brings the day. When upon the raging eea, Is the seamen reft of thee? When the frowning storm-clouds low'r, Art thou absent in that hour! Hope angelic, thou art there; 'Mid the realms of dark despair, Thy bright form bids fsar depart, Soothes the wanderer, calms the heart. When the sinner's stricken breast Id with guilt and grief oppres't; When this wretched wo-wurn mind Seeks some healing balm to find; Then thy holy radiance beams, Then its pure and heavenly gleams, Breaking on his mental night, Turns his darkness into lignt. OF TH55 WEEK. From fhe Indiana Democrat, April 5. CLASSIFICATION So. 2. In our last number, we gave a short sketcli of the policy of New York in regard to her internal improvements. That great state, with all her wealth, population and resources, expended only about 7.000,000 ; but before that amount was expended, a fund was provided to pay the interest and principal. But Indiana, a state not as large, not as populous, not as wealthy, proposes to expend the enormous amount of .$18,307,73$. St; rt not gentle reader, or if you do, paise and reflect seriously and dispassionately, if good policy, if prudence, would not dictate, that some means should be provided to pay the interest on this large amount. To run in debt is no difficult matter, but to gel out of debt is frequently a matter of the greatest ditliculty. The State has credit, the amount may be bor rowed, but can the credit be sustained, and the amount be refunded without taxation? In order to prove that wi have not over-estima...

JIISCELIjAU'EOUS. A 'NAME IN THE SAND. Aone I walked the ocean strand, A pearly shell was in my hand, I (topped and wrote upon the sand My namo, the year, and day. As onward from the tpot I passed, One lingering look behind I cast; A wave came rolling high and fast, And washed my lines away. And bo methought, 'twill shortly be With every mark on earth for me! A wave of dark oblivion's sea Will swsep across lha place Where I have trod the eunny shore Of time, and be to me no more, Of me, my day, the namo I bore, To leave no track nor trace. And yet, with Him who count the sands, And holds the waters in his hands, I know a lasting record stands Of my Redeemer's lore; That blessed Savior died for me; His love unchangeable shall be Throughout a wide eternity, In Heaven's high courts above. MISCELLANEOUS. From the Saturday Courier. HOPE FADETII A W A V. BT THE MILFOIID BARD. Away delusive dream of joy, Vain meteor of the mind, Thou art but fancy's gilded toy, That floats upon the wind. Even as the lightning's lurid light Luniines yon clouds, that roll, So art thou for a moment bright, Within the human soul. Hut when the lightning's glare sxpires. Midnight doth hold her reign; fio when the fickle flame retires, Th soul is dark again. I saw a brilliant bubble rest Upon a silvery stream; Floating upon the billow's breast, 'Twaa like hope's fairy dream. Around its globe in life and light, Was pictured every scene; Dark woods and lovely landscapes bright, And fields and groves of green. The concave and brilliant band Of golden globes, were there; As though some tiny painter's hand Had sketched their forms in air. I grasped the beauteous bubble bright, To gize on it alone; But ah! it broke it3 pictured light And landscapes, all were gone! Even thus, I said, is hope, when see...
