SAVING THE FALLS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

SAVING THE FALLS . IF Mr . Ruskin had visited the Falls of St . Anthony fifty years ago , and should revisit them to-day , what diatribes he would pour upon the heads of practical Americans . Then , he would have found a view as picturesque as that at SchalThausen ; to-day , the most latent of his antipathies to a scene of bruised nature would be aroused . But our eyes are native ; and although we may imagine the former loveliness of the place , and lightly sigh because it is changed , still we easily see the beauty of utility in the altered scene . The Mississippi at the falls is divided by Hennepin Island , and first above also by Nicollet Island , which make two channels , the western one being the wider . The energetic settlers of old St . Anthony and newer Minneapolis were not long in making the Father of W aters assist them in their industries . They soon built aids to the great dam built by Nature , made a mill-pond of the eastern channel , and the rapid growth of the communi...

RECOLLECTIONS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

RECOLLECTIONS . ( Continuedfroln February ) UNTIL the summer of 75 , we used to boast with some conceit of being among the few who stayed at home . In short we had not cared to go abroad , until fate with tender compassion smoothed the way and sent us with other tourists abroad . We offer this exordium , dear ILLINI , as a sort of apology for writing about what so many have written before ; for chronicling sights which so many of your readers have seen and appreciated . But people do not see alike , and going out of ones country for the first time , with fresh enthusiasm and experiences is rare . Therefore permit us to describe in our own way the worn-out themes of London and continental traveling . Some writer says , we speak our language as well as the well-bred of the Old World , and , being the outgrowth of that , we are not so young in manners as in years ; that having something of the whole universe in us , from the earth in our bones to the electric and magnetic forces that f...

OUR WHALE- [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

OUR WHALE- The following veritable history of Our Whale is taken from the Forest and Stream , and is from the facile pen of John U . Gregory Esq ., of Quebec , who tells so admirably his own story . On the morning of the 14 th of August , 1872 , I dispatched one of the steamers under my control on a surveying trip to the Northern Channel , a duty annually performed by that vessel . I expected her to be absent for several days and had looked forward to this with great expectations , as I would then be free to take a run out to some of the lakes , trout fishing . I had made all my preparations , looked over my flies , lines , and rods , and arranged with a congenial companion to leave early next day . Little did I then imagine the fish I was so soon to struggle with . The height of my fishing ambition was salmon and trout . I never aspired to such monsters as whales . After the departure of the steamer , I lett my office in the evening for home and at the usual hour retired to bed . A...

POPULAR ERRORS . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

POPULAR ERRORS . The minister , vas picturing in vivid word colors , the unfortunate condition of those , who , after enjoying as best they could the gayeties and frivolities of life , are by a sudden catastrophe summoned to join the innumerable caravan that moves to the pale realms of shade . With the more important part of this description , I have nothing to do here . It was probably well done . Its effect may have been excellent . Some one may even now be rejoicing , singing psalms of praise , as memory repeats the words . But there was one part of the representation , that one listener marked down as a popular error . The rest of the picture may have been true , this certainly was not . Following the remains to the grave , the body was described as being eaten by the worms . They made ghastly spectacles of the once fair forms , they stretched their slimy length in shocking filthiness over the once beautiful face , they— . I will not reproduce the story . Little thanks perhaps w...

THE UNIVERSITY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

THE UNIVERSITY . AROUND THE UNIVERSITY . The bill for filling vacancies in the Senate has passed the General Assembly , so there will be no need of vacancies in the Senate hereafter The Alethenai Society intends to hold its first evening meeting in the first week of March . The Regent thinks it advisable for the gentlemens societies to adjourn by 10 oclock , at the latest . Co . B . though decided lovers of the practical , are puite pleased with the change in their Military programme , viz ; that instead of drill they receive occasional lectures from Col . Snyder on the principles and theories of soldier and camp life . It is thought by some , that having young ladies for Associate Justices will act well on the opposite sex , as they will not wish to have ^ their violations of the laws exposed to the ladies of the University We wish the present Associate Justices much success in their work . The first drill out-side for the season , was made sometime ago in the dismal swamp , someti...

EDITOBLVL . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

EDITOBLVL . The Illinois Industrial University has just closed the eighth year of its career . Its eighth anniversary day has just been celebrated . Words commemorative of the past and predictive of the future have been nobly spoken . The University Anthem , the inheritance of our institution , has been sung . It is the voice of love , of cheer , of prophecy , measuring the triumphs of the after-time , proclaiming to the children of the human race , that a great fountain of learning and light has been called , by the will and the power of intelligence , to bless and beautify the land . May its melody , with inspiring power , roll onward through time , sustained by a full and happy realization of the glory , the grandeur , the science-sublimity , which its modulations foretell . Eight years have passed from the stage of time since the formal inaugural exercises of the University took place ; eight years characterized by giant strides of progress , influence , substantial growth . The...

OBITUARY . [Newspaper Article] — Daily Illini — 1 March 1876

OBITUARY . DIED . —On March ist , of typhoid fever , Fannie Brown , Class 79 . We feel very sad in announcing that a fellow-student—one of the brightest of our number—has suddenly been called from our midst to the rest that remains . Her death is deeply mourned by both classmates and teachers . A faithful , earnest student , her rank in class was among the first . Bright , gentle and kind , she was loved by all who knew her , and the many sunbeams which she scattered will shine forever in the hearts of her friends . Her family have our heartfelt sympathy , in this their sad bereavement .
