THE WHEATLAND PLOWING MATCH [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1907

THE WHEATLAND PLOWING MATCH The worst part- of-, « a , disagreeabje . Job is the dreading of it . ¦ ¦ ¦ ¦ » . - Going into politics will give a man a bad name quicker than anything else . You must be human but whether you are humane or not depends upon yourself . We get part of our education from others , but the best of it is gained by dear experience . Do you vote at primaries for men of your own choice or for men chosen by the political machine ? If you have something about the place that is entirely worthless it is better to trade it off , even , if you get cheated . A little farm weir tilled and a little bam well filled is just as conducive to comfort and happiness now as it was in the last century . Small farmers , who are good farmers , come about as near being independent as any class of people on earth . Two tramps wanted to sneak up to a farmer s back doo r , but the dog was making considerable noise and they hesitated . Finally one said , Go on Bill , dont you know a bark...

-aggpjaSgljSllB ^^ El Current Events iatgi _ MBBIMi _ -llM _ l « lMgl ^^ THE Illinois Manufacturers Associa * tion is responsible for the statement that an ordinary freight car is moved at an average rate of twentyfour miles a day , while Standard Oil cars are moved 124 miles a day . The association points to this kind of discrimination as more important for government investigation than the actual paying of rebates . The association also gives Congressman Madden s experience in shipping stone between Joliet and Chicago . By the use of canal boats going three miles an hour , he can make one round trip a dav between the two cities , but the railroads take five days for a round trip . There are many causes for freight delays that railway companies cannot avoid , but it is difficult to account for the many abuses that have crept into the freighting business of the country . The Manufacturers Association is doing good service in bringing these points of discrimination to light . The rai...

111 Dairy and Live Stock _ KS _ 6 ' $ § 5 [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1907

111 Dairy and Live Stock _ KS _ 6 $ § 5 4 JU « -. < -- IN ORDER to make an even , regular ¦¦ - grade of butter modern dairy unple- ¦ ments are almost an absolute necessity . You can get along by dint of hard work with the old-fashioned utensils , but does it pay ? Set the separator to skim thick cream . You cannot afford to send skim milk to the creamery . You need it at home for feeding . Secretary Wilson says that one-fourth of the dairy cows in the United States do not pay for their feed , and Tie also thinks that one-half of the cows do not return a profit to the owners .. With the present high prices of feeding stuffs it is very difficult to make a profit with scrub cows . Up-to-date cows are just as necessary in a cow stable as modern machinery in the wheat field . Some cows give , a small quantity of poor milk , others give a large quantity of rich milk . There are all grades between . Do you know exactly the grades you are milking ? If not , why not ? It may not b...

fl Orchard and Garden ^ j @ [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1907

fl Orchard and Garden ^ j @ CHEAP grass seeds usually are adulterated until they are dear at any price . In fact , a good many seeds sold on the market would be a damage to any farmer if he got them for nothing . By planting them he is seeding his land with weeds . Mr . Christy of Orchard , Neb , according tothe Fruit Grower , last fall wrapped some Jonathan apples in tissue paper and they kept until July 20 th . The Frisco system expects to handle a thousand cars of Texas grown pecan nuts this year . This is more pecans than Texas ever before raised in one year . Northwestern Arkansas has been a favored fruit section this year . A great deal of their success no doubt is due to the careful attention the orchards have received . When trees are trimmed the down limbs form a harbor for the propagation of insects which are injurious to fruit . By burning the brush the eggs of such insects are destroyed . Gentian root is grown extensively in all the mountainous regions of Italy . The roo...

IThe Grange [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 November 1907

IThe Grange SOME farmers use an eight foot drag while others hitch three horses to an implement that will palverize the soil sixteen feet at one sweep . One great big , whole-souled , large-hearted farmer hitches three eight foot spike toothed harrows behind three draft horses and cuts a swath 24 feet wide . If you use bisulphide of carbon be very careful how you handle it . It is both volatile and inflammable . Never handle it except in daylight . Interest in better corn is getting to be quite universal throughout the corn belt In many sections merchants in towns and villages get up local contests among their com growing customers . Local judges are appointed and sometimes a good deal of interest is shown . The n « t gain to the government of $ 13 .- 000 , 000 in the taxes collected on distilled spirits in the last fiscal year shows how misleading was the argument used against the law to allow the free use of alcohol in the arts , which was in effect six months of the year . The Un...
