Punch on tbe **9101*" Punch devotes a page to the great "mill" between Heenan and Savers, describing it in the style of Macaulay's "Lays of An cient Rome." It is pretty good} but might have been better. The effort to make anything really worthy of admira tion oat of a brutal bruising of men's faces for money, never can succeed, and Punch could have made a better "hit" by burlesquing the eager, fiery spirit, and the trumpet tone of the "Lays," in applying them to the low details of a fisticuff", and the heroes of the sponge and belt, than in attempting to use them to give a heroic air to the disgusting affair. We extract a portion: The stakes are pitched, the ropes are tied, The men have ta'en their stand ; Heenanus wins tfc-j toss for place. And takes the eastward hand. Cnsiccias and Macdonaldus Upon the Boy attend; Sayerius owns Bruutonus. And Jim Wetshius for friend. And each upon the other now A curions eye may throw, As from the second^ final rnb In buff at length they show, And...
