In jpito of the dense fog that overhang the snug little harbor of Sorrento, early one midsummer jnorning, a score of men were basily engaged preparing their boats for trips to the neighboring towns, while as many fishermen were drawing their well filled nets that had been spread over night Soon Father Curato, the worthy priest of Sorrento, stepped into one of the boats, and requested to be rowed to Capri as speedily as possible. "Here comes another passenger,'' was the boatman's reply, as a young girl, with a large bundle under her arm, hurried along one of the ruggGd The girl looked down in silenoe and her eyes flashed. She glanced stealthily toward the boatman, who, with his cap drawn down 'to conceal his eyes, rowed on, evidently 'occupied with his own thoughts. The priest caught the glance and was silenccd. JAMESTOWN, DAKOTA. GOLDWIN SMITH, in his late address be fore the local science congress in Dublin, spoke of the advancing evil of pauperism in Amerioa and. the anxiety with, which economists looked forward to (he necessity of permanent provision for the poor. He asserted that callings of the lighter kind was as much crowded in the United States as in England As oue remedy for the trouble "people were being led to the con victiou that the education given in the pub Iio schools ought to be of a strictly practi cal character, and that the door should be closed against ambitious programmes, which, engender a false conceit of knowledge and of superiority in common works." 4 I .y AN OLD DLIBATT STORF di One snowy winter night an English farm, er named Robin Cuitwright, sitting with his wife before bis blazing fire of oalr wood, fancied that be heard ing of a sheep outside anxious for his flock, took went out to look for the poor creature. No sheep was there, however, but instead close against the door jam, a basket lined with wool and covered with a blanket, ia whioTi lay a very young child. There were footsteps in the snow which led ap to the doer, and other steps which led away from it. Holding his lauternlow, tfho farmer followed these until they ceased .abruptly beside the margin of the river, which lay at the foot of his land. Lifting Jiis lantern over his bead, the good man shouted aloud half a dozen times: "Hullo!" he cried "Hullo!" but the deep silence of the cold winter night alone answered him. As he stood listening in vain, a shudder ran through his stout frame. His imagination pictured a young woman, trembling, un happy, shame-stricken, w...

It is thought that he is insane enough to pro tect him from severe punishment, and the authorities are disposed to await further developments. ABOUT one hundred witnesses have been summoned by the government to testify in the Guiteau case, and it is believed an equal number will be summoned for the defence. It is thought that considerable difficulty will be experienced in obtaining a jury qualified to act upon the case. LIEUT. FLIPPEB, the colored lieutenant, is on trial by court martial at Fort Davis, Texas for embezzlement of commissary funds. The testimony does not conflict materially with published aocounts at the time of his arrest. A good deal of interest Is felt in the result of the trial from the fact that Lieut. Flipper is the only colored graduate of West Point in the army. IN 1791 the Britis...
