Democratic County Central Committee of Tulare County. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 10 March 1860

Democratic County Central Committee of Tulare County. C. R. Worland, R. K. Nichols, John Swanson, 1. O. Sterns, H. D. Bequettc, E. F. Story, S. W. Beckham, J. F. Barrows, J. 6. Murray. L. O. STERNS, Chairman. S. W. Beckham, Secy. Mono Lake.—The regular periodical stampede for supposed new and rich mines is commencing. Every spring since the discovery of gold in California has there been a rush for some newly discovered mines— last spring it was Fraser's river, in the British possessions—now it is east of the Sierra Nevadas. It would be folly for us to attempt to induce any one to remain at home, who has taken it into his head to go, therefore we will only advise them of the best route to travel, &c. The best and only route that can be traveled at this season of the year, or even until June or July, is that by the way of Kern River, Owen's Lake and up Owen's River. On this route there is now plenty of grass for animals. We refer the reader to our correspondence from Keyes...

Sewing Machines. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 10 March 1860

Sewing Machines. Sewing Machines are all the rage just now, and a good one is a good institution in the family circle. A young friend of ours says of all the sewing machines extant, he prefers One of the kind that a man can love, That wears a shawl and soft kid glove; Has the merriest eyes and a dainty foot, And sports the charmingest gaiter boot; And a bonnet with feathers and ribbons and loops, With an indefinite number of hoops. One that can dance, and—possibly—flirt, And make a pudding as well as a shirtOne that can sing without dropping a stitch, And play the housewife, lady or witchReady to give the sagest advice, Or do up collars and things as nice. We like the sort that can laugh and talk, And take our arm for an evening walk ; That will do whatever the owner may choose, With the slightest perceptible turn of the screws ! 'Tis the cleverest thing that ever was seen, Our wonderful family sewing machine. Excellent Sense and Sound Patriotism. Dr. Robert J. Breekenridge, the unc...

The Capital of Japan. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 10 March 1860

The Capital of Japan. What shall I say of this greatest and most singular of all cities ? A volume is needed to describe it, without attempting to give its history. I have read of old Ninevah and Babylon below the ground, and seen and handled the works of art which have been disinterred and created so much admiration on both sides of the Atlantic ; but one living Jeddo, above ground, is worth a hundred old fogy cities below it. I cannot give you an idea of it, it is so unique, unlike anything except itself, and so impossible, as you will think. I have seen several places of interest, and maintained a cool head, but I was bewildered and confounded when I saw this. It is situated on the western shore of this charming gulf, twenty miles wide by twenty-four miles long. It stretches for twenty miles or more along a beach of semicircular form, with its horns turned outward, and along which a street extends, crowded with blocks of stores and houses, and teeming with moving crowds, while sh...

Difficulties on the Rio Grande—Americans Driven from Mesilla. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 17 March 1860

Difficulties on the Rio Grande —Americans Driven from Mesilla. From Mesilla, intelligence of an exciting character has reached us. A serious difficulty had arisen between the American and Mexican population, which had already resulted in bloodshed and the driving from town of the American residents. The position in which our correspondents are placed, has prevented our receiving full particulars; but from passengers arrived and the few letters seen, we gather the following facts as to the cause of the present unfortunate condition of affairs in that town: The Judge of the Probate Court, A. Barila. a Mexican elected at the late election, is the principal instigator of the present difficulties. On the 21st ult., contrary to law, (no complaint having been made or indictment found,) he issued an order to shut up several houses belonging to Americans. G. 11. Oury, Esq., Clerk of the Court, refused to cam* it into effect, and endeavored to convince him of its illegality; but the only answ...

Incidents of a Trip from the States to California, by the way of Panama. [Newspaper Article] — Visalia Weekly Delta — 17 March 1860

Incidents of a Trip from the States to California, by the way of Panama. O. L. MATHEWS. Pacific Ocean, on board 1 Steam Ship Golden Age, > February Bth, A. I). 1860. ) My Dear Friend: —ln a California trip j there are many pleasures, some dangers, and a goodly number of Connectives, neither interesting, pleasant, nor instructive. Of these various colored incidents upon the Atlantic, I gave you a glimpse in my last. I took my leave of you just previous to our arrival at Aspinwall. We landed at the wharf ol this place, at two o'clock Saturday, Jan. 28th, having been out from New York seven days and twelve hours. Having previously checked our trunks we picked up our Carpet sacks, delighted with the idea of once more striking our pedal extremeties on old "Terra Firma," and marched in regular rank and file for a Hotel. In finding one, we had no mflbutty, as there are several, all in a row. We made our selection, went in, took a good wash, a breakfast enly tolerable good; for w...
