Ttlr M..«.,n1».. King. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

Ttlr M..«.,n1».. King. Tins pot{|tatb,is becoming really quite a lion, and though •» utterly insignificant, is likely to bo tli.- cause of no little difficulty .between the British and American governments. A gentleman who has recently had an admirable opportunity of gleaning many facts connected with tho pretensions of this nonpareil of crowned heads, has kindly communicated them to us, and we rely with the utmost confidence upon their accuracy. Tho creation of the Mosquito Islands into a monarchy — certainly a very limited onewas a very singular proceeding, arising purely from (ha shrewdness and finessing of the late English consul. That functionary landed upon the now famous coast a simplo subject of Queen Victoria, or of his late Britannic Majesty, with a cargo of English "notions," and established a trading post. Like all traders with barbarous nations ho soon began to cterciso very groat influonco among the natives, and was looked up to as a mighty man. Desirous of having a pe...

SACRAMENTO AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

SACRAMENTO AND PLACER INTELLIGENCE [From our own Correspondent. 1 « Sacramento City, Jan. 28, r. It. 1 Tho M'Kim camo up yesterday morning, having made tho passage in nineteen hours, which is very quick for a propeller, taking into consideration the strong current setting down for over half the distance. She brought one hundred and twenty passengers, most of whom are going directly to the mines. Tho facilities for getting to most parts of the placer are now tory good. Going out to the fort from this city embraces the worst part of the way to the mining districts, included in tho throe forks of the American river. For the Yuba and Feather rivers, most of those bound in that direction go up in steamboats; row boats also tako up freight and some few passongore. I am told that provisions aro reasonably cheap in the vicinity of most of the mines— so that it would not bo good policy for those who lire going into the mining district*, at this time, to undertake to pack provisions ; for the...

I'linilnK In California. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

I'linilnK In California. The diflßculties whioh are encountered, and which it is necessary to overcome in the publication of a newspaper in California, at the present time, are manifold, but are not generally understood by the community at largo. The printer, iv all the branches of the business, labors under the greatest disadvantages. Materials of all kinds, but more especially printing paper, are procured with the greatest difficulty, and then only in sparce and insufficient quantities, and at greatly advanced prices, while labor receives a ■Ml ample compensation than at home. We find tho following correct ideas upon tho matter in a report from the Committee on Printing recently presented in the Legislature at San Joso. The report says: What would bo extravagant in tho old States, where all tho needed facilities are cheap and over at hand, would here bo oven losa than moderate A comparison of the price of labor, rents, living, materials, etc., in California, with those, say in the...

THE GOLDEN EMIGRATION [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

THE GOLDEN EMIGRATION. Through the courtesy of Capt Edw. A. King, Harbor Master, we are enabled to present the following statistical intelligence, which will demonstrate more faithfully by figures than we are editorially capable of conveying to the mind of the reader, by a more familiar process of reasoning, the expanding importance and unexampled increase in business, poppulation and wealth of the "new Eureka State." These statements are from the records of the Harbor Master's office, and the official accuracy of each may therefore entitle them to the fullest credence. Wo are requested to state for the information of passengers daily arriving at this port, as also for the benefit of the emigrants starting out from the east upon their California adventure, that intelligence can always be obtained upon application at the office of the Harbor Master, of persons who have arrived by sea, at this port. From the 12th day of April, 1849, to January 29th, 1850, inclusive, the passenger arri...

Latest from Honolulu. [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

Latest from Honolulu. We have received copies of the Polynesian of Honolulu, of the 29th Dec, through the kind attention of Hawley, Sterling & Co., and also through the post-office. This is one week later than our previous advices. Joseph Brown publishes a letter of grateful acknowledgements tothoße who aided him in saving his property from the ill-fated brig Palapsco, on the 14th December, wrecked on a reef in the harbor of Honolulu. The Polynesian learns that Mr. Bailey, of Honolulu, is about to establish an express between that port and San Francisco. The Polynesian announces the death of Kaloloahilani, wife of His Excellency Kekuanaoa, Governor of Oahu. She died of pulmonary consumption at the age of 23 years, on the morning of the 29th ult. The same paper contains the following account of the lohß of Hawaiian Tessels. '•We are sorry to hear that the gchooner Hipahipa, (formerly the Rainbow,) bolonging to His Excellency, the Governor of Maui, was totally wrecked on t...

LOCAL MATTERS [Newspaper Article] — Daily Alta California — 31 January 1850

LOCAL MATTERS Improvtmtntt.— We can scarcely keep the run of the improvement*, in the way of buildings, in San Francisco so rapidly are they carried out. An half hour's w»lfc[ yesterday, enabled us to see a small portion of what b»i been done within the last three weeks ; and, accustom^ M we are to the fast way of doing things in thii part of the country, we were really surprited. To mention th« very many new and really handsome and spacious doroicils and warehouses in process of erection, is a title that won tax our time And infringe upon our space too ranch but we cannot refrain from noting one or two of the most conspicuous. By far the most striking building that *« have seen is that in Washington street, near Montgom. cry. It is three stories high, wlih a brick front; and, when completed, will present an elegant and substantial appearance In the socond story of one portion of it „ the new Theatre Rationale.
