21 S7 ^ 4ll Southwest Chinese Journal March 1980 CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION AT GOLDEN BO RESTAURNAT Left to r.: Mr. Wallace Gee, Mr. Bill Yip, Mr. Joe, Mr. Wayne Yip, Mr. Man Lee, Mr. Park Toy The GOLDEN BO RESTAURANT owners and management from San Francisco ventured in April of 1979 to open in Houston a "San Francisco Chinatown-style Restaurant" to aquaint the people here with a "typical" Chinese Cuisine previous- ly not available here. Under the directorship of Mr. Man Lee they have been successful beyond expectation and now just 10 months later they feel as if they have been here 10 years because of the reception Houstonians have extended to them. To express their heartfelt appreciation to their many Chinese and American friends Golden Bo invited them to a Chinese New Years Eve celebration on February 15,1980. A superb Cocktail Buffet was enjoyed by the several hundreds of guests in attendance. Mr. Lee looks forward to an even bigger celebration next New Years Eve! JCecp uour k...

March 1980 & rfc? ^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal 22 The Message In March of 195^. the first color TV sets came into existence, but research work in television was noted as early as 1880. In 1939 as a representative of the State of Oregon, I was a guest of RCA. At that time, televi- sion had progressed to transmission from room to room in the building at New York's Rockefeller Center and projection within a radius of 50 miles was pos- sible. The problem of transmitting images under, over, and through mountains by June Dove Leoag ggy l° ** Today, the impact, the immen- sity of TV is felt, not only in one building and one area of a city, but throughout a nation, and throughout a world. TV has become the most influential mass media in the universe. One ponders, if in it's early stages of development - along with the process of TV invention - an architect of human behavior could have worked hand in hand simultane- ously to design a blueprint with forethought and love (as for a home, ...

23 & ^ Southwest Chinese Journal March 1980 LETTER TO THE EDITOR I want to commend Mr. William Der Bing for his well written article "Reflections" which appeared in the Feb- ruary, 1980, issue of the Southwest Chinese Journal. It was very informative and very true what was written about the strife within the Chinese family associations. The Chinese Americans should be united to stride for equal advancement opportunities. The Chinese American professionals have been dis- criminated for a long time. What can we do about it? A way is to get the (EEO) Equal Employment Opportunity Office to recognize the Chinese Americans as a minority. I had tried to sell this idea to some of the Chinese clubs in Houston, but to no avail. I hope that readers of this article who know the laws and have some ideas as to how to get the Chinese classified as a minority in the state of Texas will come forward. If we can do this, it will help the Chinese professionals and their future generations tremendou...

11 3? ^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal April 1980 On Easter, April 6th, the churches of America will be overflowing with worshippers. Huge Sunday congregations will be common occurrences throughout the nation on this very special day in which Christ is remembered with love and reverence. He rose from the dead..and in this act He gave hope to all mankind of an everlast- ing Heavenly Eternity for all who believe in Him. He suffered on a cross of shame..and in this cruci- fixion..He still loved. "Before the cock crows, you would have denied me three times." The Message by June Dove Leong Peter heard these words, but boasted of his own firm loyalty. However, when the cock crowed.. Peter had indeed denied Him three times. Peter..the rock..on which He built His church. If there were no sinners..there would be no churches*.no ministers..no memberships. If there were no illnesses.. there would be no hospitals..no doctors..no mercy. For all his frailty..Christ loved Peter..as He loved his disc...

Dancie has worshipped at Chinese Baptist since 1955 -therefore when one thinks of the church and faithful service in the Lord - one thinks of Dancie. Her heart is filled with joy as she works for His purposes. But it was not always thus, reveals Dancie. Once there was bitterness and resentment. She re- calls the days in her young years when she and her husband, the late Mr. H. Wong lived in Rosedale, Miss- issippi and their treatment as second rate citizens - when prejudice ran high and strong - when segregation was a word one dreaded, but lived with - day-after-day due to the color of one's skin. Her two boys, Pershing and Kellogg, were not a...

13 S? ^ 4H Southwest Chinese Journal April 1980 U TRANSPLANTED CHINESE CHILDREN In adjusting to the United States, many Chinese immigrant children in New York City face serious problems, including deplorable housing conditions, overcrowded schools and painful conflict with their parents' values. These were among the findings presented in Trans- planted Chinese Children, a report on a three-year, ACYF-funded study on Chinese immigrant children living in New York's Chinatown area and in the higher-income Elm- hurst section of Queens. The study was conducted by Professor Betty Lee Sung of the City College of New York, who says little research has been done on the influx of Chinese into the United States that has occurred since the immigration laws were liberalized in 1965. Accord- ing to Professor Sung, the number of Chinese admitted to the U.S. each year has risen from about 6,000 in 1964 to over 30,000 in 1979, with 25% to 30% of the immigrants under the age of 19. Near Chinatown on ...

April 1980 ^ 4$. Southwest Chinese Journal 14 DR. and MRS. P0 WEN LEE by June Dove Leong Jean had won a scholarship to the University of Houston and was ready to embark on her journey from Taiwan to Houston to earn her Masters degree in chemical engineering when friends advised that she needed a kindly soul to look after her. The caring person they recommended was Po Wen Lee. Po Wen Lee graduated from the National Taiwan Medical College in 1968. From 1969 to 1971 he served as a resident in the pediatric department in the hos- pital connected with the medical college from which he graduated. The choice was Po Wen Lee's to go wherever he pleased to go. Without hesitation, he made the choice to come to the States. With lovely Jean destined for America, he would protect her from all harm in a strange country. As it turned out, it became a most pleasant task - one in which he made his, for-a-lifetime assign- ment - for ultimately Po Wen Lee presented Jean with his own degree - an MRS at ...

15 & $ 41*- Southwest Chinese Journal April 1980 IMAGES by e/sie huang Are you a number person that measures events, emotions, things and people with some kind of unit of measure? Well, if so, don't feel that you are in the minority, as I am one of those who has been using numbers to measure for a long time . . . way before Bo Derek and the film "10" was popular! Usu- ally I use "1 to 10" as my system of rating; 1 being low, and 10 being high. The topic I want to share with you this month is not necessarily how you rate everything that happens around you each day, but on one of the high price or high pressure wave lengths that might occur to you, if you stand up for what you feel is right or fair. I'm sure you remember how unfair you felt it was when the Houston Oilers' touch down wasn't called as such, during the game with the Pittsburgh Steelers, or when a colleague of yours at work got a certain position or job when you were really better qualified for the job! We have all wi...

April 1980 \Bj \4H Southwest Chinese Journal 16 ::; '' TO PUNISH OR NOT TO PUNISH By WEINING C. CHANG, Ph.D. Psychologist A question puzzles many parents: whether to punish or not to punish our children in the course of child upbringing. There are many schools of thoughts regarding the use and effectiveness (or in- effectiveness for that matter) of the use of punish- ment. In psychology, the study of punishment is now a special field in its own right. Scholars differ in their opinions. Here I will not attempt to solve the controversy of using punishment. Given that punishment has always been part of our everyday life, I would like to point out some issues involved in the use of punishment: 1. To punish the child for what the child does Many adults punish their children not because of what the child does but because of the parent's mood. It is tough to be a parent these days, raging inflation, pressure from the family . . . all render us confused and annoyed or downright depressed. A...
