THURSDAY, JUNES, 1978 THE BASTROP COUNTY TIMES, SMITHVILLE, TEXAS 78957 PAGE 3 Animal Research Extended Few people may be aware that the Camp Swift Veter- inarian Research Division is a part of the Buescher Sci- ience Park. The Camp Swift Division, located less than 15 miles from the Science Park, is the experimental animal division of the park. "We are a support func- tion of the research divis- ion," said Dr. Michale E. Keeling, an assistant professor of veterinary med- icine and surgery. Three professional doctors are working at the veterin- arian center. Dr. Keeling, Dr. Kenton E. Riddle, and Dr. Robert H. Carpenter make up the professional staff. Dr. Keeling comment- ed that they are hoping to add another doctor, also. The site of the veterinary program is on 374 acres of the Camp Swift area, a World War II basic training sight. The Texas Department of Health Resources in 1975 deeded the land to the Uni- versity of Texas System. The facility houses many species of animals and i...

The University of Texas System Environmental Sci- ence Park is an exception, however. The idea of the Cancer Research Center originated in 1963. more than 15 years ago, with Dr. R. Lee Clark, president of The University of Texas Cancer System as the motivating force. In 1971 the 62nd lexas Legislature, through Sen- ate Bill No. 278. authorized The University of Texas System Board of Regents to establish and maintain the new park. State funding of $100,000 was set tor the first year. Other appro- priations were also app...

Kennedy d that the park would ide "singular and un- environmentai re- :h," because almost all he land has remained uched by humans, ter years of planning hard work, the actual construction of the buildings began in January of 1976. Soon, huge ma- chines and droves of workers flocked to the designated area, and in only a matter of months, the plans began to take shape and structures grew. The $4.1 million research facilities included two re- search buildings, a confer- ence center and maintenance headquarters. That is in buildings, alone. The mod- ern equipment and neces- sary facilities for the labs cost a great deal more. Hopes are that the 44,000 square feet of lab space will grow to 100,000. The objective of the re- search at the science park is to obtain a basic under- standing of the processes which res...

Weather slowed down progress a hit hut all in all it was completed on time. —Times Photo For one man, Thursday's dedication of the cancer research center will be the culmination of many years of work and planning. Dr. R. Lee Clark, who will step down in August after 10 years as president of the M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute, has always been the driving force behind the Science Park. In 1963, Dr. Clark started the process which resulted in the science park. It took until April of 1971 for the state legislature to approve the plan and another seven years to complete construc- tion. As Dr. Clark told one re- porter, the science park will bring "a new kind of combined emphasis on re- search and education, with a lot of emphasis on public ed- ucation." Dr. Clark i...
