"It's deeply disturbing that the Supreme Court has taken a dangerous turn away from fairness for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans," Solmonese said. Solmonese said that with Alito's confirmation, it is more important than ever for members of the nation's GLBT community to get involved in politics and vote in November. "Our opportunity to get back on the road to equality comes this November," Solmonese said. "The senators who stepped up today to protect fairness by voting against Judge Alito's confir- mation were acting on America's fundamental promise of equality. BUSH Continued from Page 1 noted Bush compared marriages between same- sex couples to the lobbying scandals that have plagued the Republican Party in recent weeks. In his speech Bush said, "Many Americans, especially parents, still have deep concerns about the direction of our culture, and the health of our most basic institutions. They are concerned about unethical conduct by public officials, and dis- couraged by activist courts that try to redefine marriage." Eric Stern, executive director of National Stonewall Democrats said Bush should focus on winning the war on terror, reigning in the nuclear capability of Iran and North Korea and address- ing other problems at home. "It is dishonest for President bush to ethically couple marriage recognition of American fami- lies with the permissive, slop-trough gorging on special interest money that has shamed the Bush Administration and his Republican Party," Stern said. Maryland legislators debate gay-marriage ban Baltimore County judge's ruling striking down 1973 law defining marriage as union between men and women only begins effort By Kristen Wyatt Associated Press ANNAPOLIS, Md. — An emotionally charged debate over whether same-sex marriages should be outlawed in the Maryland Constitution went before state lawmakers Tuesday, with con- servatives pushing for a ballot question on gay marriage even as an appeals court weighs the matter. Before a packed room and dozens more wait- ing outside, the House Judiciary Committee began hearing testimony on a GOP proposal to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriages and civil unions. Gay marriage "is not within the concept of the laws of nature/* said Delegate Don Dwyer, a Republican, who sponsored the amendment. Dwyer said lawmakers would be derelict if they left the question to courts. Dwyer also said gay people can choose whether to be gay and therefore can't compare themselves to racial minoriti...

localnews NATIONAL BRIEFS From Staff and Wire Reports Military investigates paratroopers' gay porn Web site appearances A group of paratroopers from the elite 82nd Airborne Division have been moved from their regular barracks while military officials investi- gate allegations that they appeared on a gay pornography Web site. The investigation is still at an early stage, divi- sion spokeswoman Maj. Any Hannah said in a statement. The move was prompted by concerns for the soldiers' privacy and rights, not for fears about their safety, she said. The 82nd Airborne acknowledged the investi- gation last week but declined to say how many soldiers might have appeared on the military- themed porn site. A defense official speaking on condition of anonymity said last week that as many as seven soldiers were involved. The paratroopers have been allowed to seek legal assistance, but no charges have been filed, the division has said. There are no direct references on the Web site to the 82nd Airb...
