Friday June 28 1974 Summer time is here and [everyone is ready for that long •awaited vacation or those .weekend outings in parks or on the beautiful lakes in and [around Fort Hood. When we go •to the lake to fish or to a park !for an outing and we build a ‘campfire to either cook on •roast a rsh a llo s or [whatever we must remember ►(yes I mean you and I) a few .fire and safety rules in order to have a safe and fire free weekend. The first thing to remember is to pick a safe place to build a campfire. First you select a place that has no vegetation near the campfire site. Page Two-A It’s Fourth of July time again and everybody’s getting the safety speeches from the Commanding General right on down the line. And do most of us need it? Nope. We know better. None of us drink to excess. We never are overexposed to the sun. We’re all sensible drivers on the road and don’t even go near fireworks. Most of all none of us would be so stupid as to use an air mattress or inner tube as a life-preserver if we can’t swim. No there’s no reason at all to get this safety baloney year after year but still they persist. Why can’t they just leave us alone and talk to the bad apples? Maybe it’s the bad applies who never hear the speeches. And maybe there’s a little bad apple in all of us. This article then is directed to that little bit of bad apple. I’m not going to lecture you on all the cardinal sins. You’ve heard enough about them already. I would like to give you some tips though that might help to avoid making you another statistic this weekend. Inner Tubes and Air...

Page Four-A Best wishes to the Nation on eve of 198th birthday It was July 4 1776 and John Hem cock the defiant President of the Continental Congress emboldened by the rising numbers of Americans crying out for freedom took the quill of liberty into his hand and sig- ned his name in letters large enough for King George III of England to read despite his failing eyesight. In due course all the members of that fledgling Congress had signed the document and the birth of a Nation was prescribed. “When in the Course of human Events it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another and to as- sume among the Powers of the Earth the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation. Page Eight-A Being lost in a forest or in the mountains is no joking atter. And it’s even less funny if you’re a soldier who’s lost in enemy territory. However researchers at MASSTER recognize the seriousness of the problem and even if they can’t help the weekend hiker who loses his way they are trying to help soldiers ith their cross- country navigation. In a current test a MAS- STER (Modern Army Selected Systems Test Evaluation and Review) the researchers are examining five new electronic location indicators that can help a soldier pinpoint the location of his vehicle at any given time. Also included in the test is an examination of an automatic distance indicator that is designed to measure elec- tronically the exact distance that a soldier has walked no matter what size steps he takes. Still another device under study combines the charac- teristics of the location in- dicator and the distance in- dicator and is designed to be carried on the back of a walking man. “Both the dista...
