V HSU Baud Svtmakm 15 lt2 HSU Cowgirl's Lack Depth Against St. Edwards in Opener By Ken Ncdoma The Hardin-Simmons Cow- girl soccer team opened their 1992 campaign this past week at Parramorc field. The oppo- nent for the home opener was St Edward's University from Austin. The first half was an excit- ing defensive struggle with Rcna Lyman andDawn Parkins turning in outstanding defen- sive stops. St Edward's scored the first goal of the game 38 minutes into the half by Monica Rich. The Hilltoppers domi- nated the first half shots on goal but the Cowgirl defense held them to only one goal and the NCAA Removes Itself From Loan Investigation in Virginia (Continued from page 10) ceived illegal funds. The NCAA announced that it has hired James Park Jr. a Lexington Ky. attorney and former Kentucky Court of Ap- peals Judge to investigate any connection Dick Schultz may have had to loans made to stu- dents from 1981-87 the time that Schultz was employed at the University. 2 OPINION HSU Brand September 29 1992 Editorial Perspective Isn't life wonderful? It's only September and I feel -like IVe been in classes for a whole se- mester. My whole schedule this semester is enough to cause stress but what have I got to complain about. I'm actually quite fortunate that I'm able to attend classes and be involved on campus. I think as students many things are taken forgranted. Talk to any non-traditional student and you'll discover just how "easy" you have it as a full-time student I know you probably expect to hear a "when I was young..." story . (You know the kind like your parents told you whenever they wanted you to appreciate something.) You may have chose to ignore your par- ents at the time but behind their story was and is an important message be thankful for what you have and take advantage of all opportunities. Who knows where we will be in five years. Our lives will mostcertainly be different. Some of you will start families pursue your career orchoo...

FEATURES 3 HSU Brand September 29 1992 Candidates Clearly View Abortion Issue Differently By Karen Neusudt (CPS) If a :;ngle issue has deeply divukuu v ountry split campuses threatened friend- ships and fractured political parties it's the issue of abortion rights. "Pro-life" or pro-choice" have become zzwords this election ye nepring cam- paign speeches ai: churning up frenzied debate. Some college students will be voting for the first time many of them w i to the polls because of personal convictions about abortion. President Bush is the pro- life candidate while Governor Bill Clinton represents the pro- choicemovement. Because more college-age women are affected by abortion than any other age group both candidates have strong support on campuses throughout the nation. President Bush supports a constitutional amendment that would outlaw abortion except in cases of rape incest or when the mother's life is endangered. 1 September 29 1992 FEATURES Mudslinging 4& Republicans By Jonathan Woody Admitting that I'm a Re- publican is not as easy as it seems. As I read the newspa- pers and watch the TV I'm beginning to feel that Republi- cans are not very wanted these days especially in the oval office. However I refuse to allow this minor setback of Bush and Quayle bashing to dampen my spirits. I'm still holding firm to the GOP. I grew up in a family that was both Southern Baptist and re- publican. It wasn't until I arrived at college that I learned that Baptist and Republican do not necessarily mean the same thing. Nevertheless many of the values that I was taught in the Baptist church seemed to coincide closely with the way the Republican party saw things. This was es- pecially true when it came to the issues of not legalizing abortion favoring prayer in schools and not allowing ho mosexuals to declare themselves a minority. Today I hold to these values very strongly and they are defi- nitely a la...

4 FEATURES ?. MS: X- BSU NOTES InMaxLucado'sbook "On The Anvil" He tells the story of two friends fighting together in a war. Combat was ferocious and many lives were taken. When one of the two young sol- diers was injured and could not get back to the trenches the other friend went out to get him against his commanding officer's orders. He returned mortally wounded and his friend whom he carried back was dead. The officer looked at the dying soldier shook his head and said "It wasn't worth it". The dying man smiled and said "But it was worth it sir because when I got to him he said "Jim I knew you would come!" In Romans 5 :6-8 it say s "You see at just the right time when we were still powerless Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us." When we stop and think just for a second of the love Chri...

October 6 1992 FEATURES 5 Mudslinging By Sara Allsup Education is an extremely important issue this election. There is no question that America's educational system needs vast improvements. During the last election year President Bush wanted to be called the education president. Why? Because it lead the public to believe that he was going to makechangesandimprovements to our educational system. Was that yet another lie? Since he has done very little for education? Gov. Bill Clinton's educa- tion record in his home state of Arkansas is very good there is no need for political ploys or cute titles. During histerm as governor he not only made im- provements he has also imple- mented programs that work such as revoking driver's licenses of students who dropped out of school for no good reason and requiring eighth graders to pass a test before enteringhigh school. The success of these programs are evident by the fact that the state of Arkansas achieved the highest high-school graduation ...
