MELODRAMA IN REAL LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — Sandringham Southern Cross — 11 April 1914

MELODRIAMA IN REAl. LIFE, A little of the romantic, Swift tells us, is no ill ingredient to preserve and exalt the dignity of human nature. And in this dictum all will concur, lunt there is a great ldendecy on the part of minds both great and small to lonpart a little too much ofthis sort of thing into everyday affairs. \Ve all know the story concerrn ing the dramatic instinct of a soldier who bore a reprieve for a companion ordered to be shot. lie rode at headlong speed until lie reachled a summinit comllmand ing the camp wherein the doomed man lay, aind then waited until the sin had risen abhove the honion, and the firing party had turned out and was proceeding to the place of execution, One of the outposts remonstrated with him for de. laying his glad tIdintgs, asking why Ite did not ride on, and so relieve his com. rade's feelings. "\VWhat !" exclaimed the messenlger, ndignantly; " would you have me spoil all the dramatic effect i' I A minute later he clapped spurs to his horse,...

INTERCEDING WITH A MAGISTRATE. [Newspaper Article] — Sandringham Southern Cross — 11 April 1914

INTERCEDING WITH' A MAGISTRATE, A young friend of mine (says a corres. pondetl ), unhappily fell into evil courses, and at last the law got hold of him. lie was brought up at the police court, and remanded for a few dat) s, In the interval I had an opportunity of seeing the magistrate, and I told himi all the good I could about the young mlan. I laid particular stress upon his ability and the promising career which his crime had blasted, Ile listened to all I had to say pa. tiently. 'Then he asked me: " lie is an in telligent, well-educated fellow, is he ?' I assented ; and the magistrate rei marked : " I am very glad you have told me this; I was going to give himin a month,'' So I went a:way well satisfied. The prisoner was brought up again, and the magistrate, after a few remarks about the prisoner's evident intelligence and ability to tell right from wrong, sen tenced hIi to six mioths' imprisonment with hard labour, the limiit of the law. Since that day my services as inter cess...

SOMETHING QUITE DIFFERENT. [Newspaper Article] — Sandringham Southern Cross — 11 April 1914

SOIMETHIIN(; QU ITE D)IFFERENT, There was a lion tamer who willingly rentured into the cages of the most fero cious beasts, having no fear of them, al. though he was often badly bitten ; but he had a dreadful fear of taking bron chitis. One day,.after he had entered, with perfect composure, a cage containing two half-starved bears and a panther, he 11hook his head gravely as he caine out. "W ell, well, sir," he said to a gentle. man who stood near, "this is going to end badly for me some day." " You are afraid those ferocious ani. mals will devour you, then ?" "'The animals? I'shaw I You don't think I'm afraid of them, sir? Not at all; but these cages, sir, are such a dreadful place for drau?ghts I"

ALWAYS NOTICED IT. [Newspaper Article] — Sandringham Southern Cross — 11 April 1914

' Well," said MIrs. Smithson, as she nd her friend Mrs. IHarkins entered the ailway train, "there's one thing that lakes me disinclined to get into the last arliage,'" "Arce you afraid of the other trains :atching up and running into the hind :arriage, Mirs. Smithson ?" "No, MIrs. Harkins, no. You see, ve'd be safest in the hind carriage if we ihould catch up and run into some other rain. But it's on account of the time ;oin' through the tunnels.'' " W\Vhat do you mean, Mrs. Smithson ?" "Why, hain't you ever noticed, Mrs. HIarkins, that it takes the last carriage ioniger to get out of the tunnels than it does the front ones ? I've always noticed it--and it stands to reason, too."

THE LAND OF USED-TO-BE. [Newspaper Article] — Sandringham Southern Cross — 11 April 1914

TIlE LAND OF USED-TO.BE, Beyond the purple, hazy trees Of summer's utmost boundaries; Beyond thie sand,, beyond the seas, Beyond the range of eyes like these, And only in the reach of the Enraptured gaze of memory, There lies a land long lost to meC--. The land of Used-to-be. A land enchanted--.such as swung In golden seas when sirens clung Along their dripping brinks and sung 'o Jason in that mystic tongue That dazed men with its melody- . Oh, such a land, with such a sea, Kissing its shores eternally, Is the fair Used-to-be. A land where music ever girds The air with belts of singing birds, And sows all sounds wihi such sweat word s That even in the lowing herds A meaning lives so sweet to me; Lost laughter ripples limpidly From lips brimmed o'er with all the glee Of rare old Used-to-be; , Oh, land of love and dreamy thoughts, And shining fields and shady spots Of coolest, greenest grassy plots, lEnlossed with wild forget-me-nots. And all ye blooms that cunningly Lift up your face...
