QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY SPORTS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 31 March 1899

QUEEN'S BIRTITDAY SPORTS. A meeting was held in the Shire Hall on Wednesday evening to discuss the advisability of holding sports on f Queen's Birthday. A fair number of gentlemen attended, but the meeting was not a thoroughly representative one, as several prominent townsmen were conspicuously absent. This cause may, however, be assigned to the fact i that insufficient notice was given of the intention to hold the gathering, º Iut notwithstanding this drawback, the preliminary business in connection therewith was satisfactorily arranged, and if the proposed celebration will only receive the practical support of the comnlunity (which assuredly it should do) the residents of the town, and district should have no reason to complain of the dearth of opportunity for enjoyment on the 24th May. A sports gathering, it will ,e remnern lered, was held last year, and though the day was unsuited for outdoor re creation, a profitable return of £l or so resulted, and this su. it is intended to t...

FROM "PUNCH." [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 31 March 1899

FROI "PUNCH." Paris and London Ambassador Taverner was originally a coachdriver, and is now by professiei an auctioneer. Dubberke was very particular about her personal appearance during the Boot Box Tragedy trial, and in her apartment at Melbourne gaol made diligent use of the mirror placed at her disposal. How remarkable it is that all Mel bourne's Anglican Bishops, Drs. Perry, Moorhouse, and Goee, have been mar ried men without any family. No wonder B3ishop Goe is rep'jrted to be devoid of sympathy for the exaggerated families of the clergy said to be starv ing. When a man is legal manager of twenty-one mining coinpanir.s, director of as many more, and has to administer two huge State departments, his time is valuable; and this is why the IIon. A. J. Peacock put up a record on his recent trip to Queensland, travelling 4000 miles in eleven days, and spend ing a whole day at Sydney and Iris bane and two days at the Mount .Mor gan lMine, which is managed icy an old Creswiek sehroola...

Ije @uar iam. PUBLISHIED FRIDAY MORNINGS. FRIDAY, MARCH 31, 1899. GENERAL NE WS. o: With the advent of Eastertide, the usual influx of visitors are arriv ing in the town, and the accommoda tion space of the respective persons who cater for their wants is becoming somewhat taxed. Last Easter, it will be remembered, on the occasion of the Christian Endeavor Chatauqua, the atmosphere of the township fairly throbbed with the hum of the sound of human voices, but although we do not expect during the present holiday season to live amid such a scene of gaiety and pleasant associations, it is pleasing, nevertheless, to contem plate that a kind Providence has en dowed us with the beautiful sur roundings which call for such favor able commendation from those visitors who annually make this town and dis trict their trysting place. The local railway station presented an unusually busy appearance last evening upon the arrival of the ordinary train (which was over half an hour late). The station ...

The gam,,e was very entjnyablle, and resulted in a win for the home team by four runs, the scores being 87 and 83. For the local team, M1'Callum, who has been out of form during the season, saved the game at a critical juncture, and his contribution of 30 was the outcome of good and sound cricket.
