State and Prospects of New South Wales. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 18 November 1848

State and Prospects of New South Wales. The commercial advices recently received from England have spread gloom and anxiety throughout the colony. The bad news, following so closely upon the adverse judgement in the case of the Bank of Australia, could not have arrived at a more inopportune juncture. A large proportion of the colonists were already suffering under a deep depression of spirits. The shareholders in that unhappy concern were for the most part apprehensive of irretrie- vable ruin; while our land and stockholders in general were dreading the consequences of that depreciation of property which was naturally anticipated from the forced sales required for meeting the Bank obligations. The announcement of a fall in the prices of wool and tallow was a bitter aggrava- tion of these dark forebodings. We scar- cely think that any period in the history of the colony there was ever a more settled dejection in* the minds of the inhabitants than has prevailed during the last fort- n...

The name and address of the writer must accompany each com- munication. To the JEditor of the "Independent Journal." MB. EDITOB,-By allowing a subscriber a small space in your columns, you will oblige one who is deeply interested in the welfare of this colony in the best sense, and who regards the present as a very im- portant crisis in the history of the same. Pitiable must be the state of that mind, who does not partake and rejoice in the very delightful influence resulting from the visitation of our deservedly revered and beloved Bishop. Our prayer for him is, " Long may he work the works of Grod." We think every christian must feel that in him they have a father, and a friend. It is such prelates who so proclaim ana prac- tice the benign and glorious truths of the gospel, that make our Church " the bul- wark of our native land." Such minds dra...

France. [Newspaper Article] — The Perth Gazette and Independent Journal of Politics and News — 18 November 1848

France. It is difficult to give any accurate de- scription of the actual state of feeling pre- vailing for the last fortnight in Paris. On the one hand, we learn that the garden of the Tuileries, theatres, and other places of public amusement have been re-opened, and the funds have risen considerably; whilst, on the other, General Cavaignac has found it necessary to continue the city in a state of seige, and uneasy rumours daily present themselves. For instance, the funeral procession for the victims of the 23rd of June, which was to have ex- tended from the Place de, la Eevolution (Concorde) to the Place de la Bastille, a distance of three miles, accompanied with great pomp and ceremony, was reduced to the greatest simplicity and briefest route. It passed off on Thursday without any ac- cident of mark. General Cavaignac was present, in plain clothes. The Bishop of Orleans, assisted by four other Bishops, celebrated high mass for the dead. Great military precautions were, however, t...
