ACTRESS'S 89TH BIRTHDAY [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 25 March 1914

ACTRESS'S 89TH BIRTHDAY Yesterday that fme actress, Mrs John Billington, entered her 90th. year (says "The Daily Telegraph" of Janu ary 5) and her many friends in and outside the profession will be delighted to know that, in spite of her great age and precarious health, she preserves • all her vigor of mind, together with that cheerfulness' of spirit which has always been one of her most endearing characteristics. Mrs BiUington's youthful successes were achieved in the early , days of Queen Victoria's reign, when theatres were few and salaries low; but friends were plenty. In the list of members of the old Adelphi company, in which Mrs Billington played "leading lady" for many years, were such names as Benjamin Webster, Madame Celeste. T. P. Cooke, Paul Bedford, J. L: Toole, the Billingtons' life-long friend and as sociate, and the eccentric Robert Romer. Among her pleasantest recollections is the last tour of her acting career, when she went as "heavy lead" to America with the beau...

IN WILD MONGOLIA PEOPLE ARE STIRRING Sir Francis Younghusband, K.C.t.E., in a fine article in the "Saturday He view," says:— "All Asia has of late been stirring into life. He knew, or han guessed, much of the complications which had ensued upon the appear ance of his " yuuilg master," whose talks with him had convinced him that ho was Robert, Lord Jloutaruor, and mi other. Both he and the house Ici-pcr, Mrs. Lane, had been lustal ed when Robert was a young child. OFF THE EARTH! NOVICE'S ADVENTURE ON SKI. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 25 March 1914

OFF THE EARTH! NOVICE'S ADVENTURE O.V SKI. (By a special correspondent in "The Daily News and Leader'). You soon learn that winter sport in the Alps means really ski-ing. The skaters are a small and artistic class apart. Toboganning is a healthy and vivacious sport for children and those who are child-hearted. Sleighing, well wrapped up in furs, with plumed horses and bells a-jingle, Is for rich Germans Bob-sleighing is excellent communal fun, requiring considerable skill for such a run as the full length of the Cresta. But ski-ing is for those who are young and adventurous, who love to range on mountain slopes instead cf a rink behind the hotel, and who are sound in wind and limb The man who is Just beginning to wonder whether he is too old at forty and is a newcomer looks upon the young ana ruddy ski-ers at the hotel as an elderly farmer regards Hamel at Hendon. Ah', new blood, sup?le limbs, and exquisite skill! The lucky young roguesl He merely listens witii interest to their ani...

Buchan Caves. [Newspaper Article] — Bruthen and Tambo Times — 25 March 1914

The Buchan caves are steadily growing in popularity among tourists. During last January, no, fewer than 570 admission fees.   were paid, which, means, that probably about 300 people inspec- ted one or more of the caves; while in February the admissions numbered 251. Since the caves were first made available for pub- lic inspection sixyears ago a to- tal of 8900 admissions have been paid for. The Royal Cave, which was opened, for the first time at the beginning of this seas- on, now vies in popularity with the Fairy Cave, for it contains some delicate formations of un- ique size and beauty. Nothing in Australian caves, it is claimed, equals the magnificence of the formation resembling a waterfall, to which has been given the name Niagara, and a group of stalac-   tites and stalagmites, aptly known     as the Font of the Gods, has aroused the enthusiasm of large   numbers of the visitors. The   Royal Cave is...
