AT HEADQUARTERS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 April 1900

AT HEADQUARTERS. In apite of the downpour on Sun day uat, more than ' the average audience were present for the monthly musical night, and although the weather prevented the attendance of several vocalists who had promised, a good programme was provided. Miss juiumuBii uetug uut ui wwu, mr, Williams officiated at the piano, and the programme was made up of recitations b y Mr. Waldon and Com rade Neill, and vocal items by Com rades Proud and Harvey, Comrade Moroney was in. charge of the lecturette, and undertook to place in simple language the Socialist formula — nationalisation of the land and instruments of production ; also ' class-consciousness, and surplus value. ' He did so in a very plain and telling manner, and wound up one of his happiest efforts by devoting atten tion to the oft-repeated tale that ' human nature was too selfish ' to achieve Socialism. The speech was brief, and punctuated with humor; and yet withal breathed the fervor and enthusiasm that is the strongest cha...

Reactionary Incapacity. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 April 1900

Reactionary Incapacity. Among other plague matters that were discussed at last meeting of Sydney Labor Council, waa the action of the panic- stricken City Council in deciding to have the garbage of the city cleaned and destroyed b» contract wi h the Penhoe De tractor Company. J. 0. Moronev (tobacco workers' delegate) diew attention to this departure irom the day labor system. He pointed out that this particular contract and leatructor had been rnshid through amid charges of bribery which, of course, the person who had made them had not the moral courage or decency to substantiate, although he stated he had been himself offered £100 to shut his mouth. The delegate said the City oouncil admitted its own incompetence in allowing this work to be done by contraet, and it was a further argument for the immediate crea tion of a Greater Sydney Council which would be representative of the intereta of the workers and would be capable of bringing the administration of Sydney to a state of mode...

"Helen's Objections." [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 7 April 1900

' Helen's Objections.' By ' Lutu.' ' Very well, Fred,' said Helen, quietly. ' I'll Bubmit in this much ; if you leave and go to that war on the off chance of making money and to win a name for yourself, to ruthlessly ' shoot down in cold blood the Boer farirers, who are, at any rate honest, peaceable men and never did you any personal, or even national harm, I can only look upon you as a murderer, and under these circumstances I would riot have any more to do with you. 'If,' Helen went on hurriedly, you shot or killed by any means one man in a fit of anger or in self defenco, hers in your oarn country, I could find it in ray heart to forgive you, and that would only make me yearn towards you all the more. But this war — which all just men and all thinking men condemn — under the cover of glory, ?' my country,' and a host of other highBOunding phrases, the awful degrading horrors of war, 8nd the base object for which it is instigated iB sugarcoated over and made into a grand abstract...
