THE POLICEMAN ON THE PLATFORM. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 27 March 1896

THE PIOLiCEMANx Ox THr PLATFOIIR. -Before retrenchment became the order of the day in all Government departments a constable Was stationed regularly at tile North Melbourne railway station, but now his place knows .him no more, and tile station is " shadowed " by tile police from Spencer-street terminus. Retrenchment is an excellent thing, and was badly wanted, but it is to be feared the ar.thorities do not always apply the pruning knile to the wild blossoms of expenditure with due wisdom, as the following will indicate :-A constable comes from Russell-street. to give evi dence in a case at North Melbourne, and he is allowed 2s. expenses by the Crown, but where the actual expenses involved on the witness' part comes in is difficult to see. If Williamstown were the court he had to travel to from Russell-street, it could be understood, as there would be train .fare, and possibly- a meal requisite, but to say that 2s. is spent on coming from the city to North, South, East, or West Melb...

GROSS VANDALISM. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 27 March 1896

Goss V.ANIALIst.-It is not so very long ago since the University authorities erected a handsome cast iron fence, resting on a stone basement. p.on the Sydney-road side of their ground, in place of the rickety wooden erection which ihad been an eyesore for a long time. mowever some ill conditioned anddestructively-minded scoundrels have knocked of the ornamental heads of the uprights-especially at the parts where the fence is on low groun 1. and the top easily reached. For hundreds of yards this destruction has been indulged in, and before tihe whole crown of the rail ings is destroyed, it would be as well to see what a plain-clothes constable in the vicinity after nightfall could accomplish. Such cnduct is utterly inexcusable, and deserves severe punishment, and un happily thins wanton injury to property is by no means uncommon. PnEsExTATlos.-On Saturday even ing, 21st inst.,.at the Victorian Poultry and Kennel Club-rooms, Collins-street, a very pleasing duty fell to the lotof Mr. J...

FIRES AND ;FINANCES. IT iS noWv-o60e years since the Volhin teer Fire Br-gide lystem was super seded by a permanent corps of "fire fighters,", whoso duties are concerned with extinguishing fires solely, for which tlheyare paid. Superintendent Srmsx, a London fireman of considerable experi ence, and one who has served under the famous Captaiti, Sat.w, in the metro polis of the world, was brought out from Eu.gland, and given pretty well carte ?nc'- h om:ission-with- regard--ta-fire preventioncand 'extinction in Melbourne and.:suburbs. The result has been emi nently satisfactory, take it all round, and the citizens of Melbourne need have no apprehension of the old bungling of some of thie volunteers when the water did iore"hiarnl than the fire ; and a lolking gl.ss wsas:thrown out of a third story window, while a straw mattrass was carefully lotered down to the street.
