Football. THE Emu Club, of Maryborough, has also held its annual meeting, and rattled off its business in fiuo style. Beport very satisfactory considering; and adopted in the beat of manners. His " Washnp" the -Mayor ipresident; vice-presidents, T. T. Woodrow and J. Murdoch; secretary and treasurer unaltered (Mr. T. Miller, jun.), and nsual committee of five. This club is a really good one, and can take a lot of beating. Although thsy couldn't take the shine out of the Gympieites last season there is to be great war in the camp, 1883, and the Emus are to come to the front. Gympie followed on May 1st with, its meeting, to see how affairs were being managed. What strange names they do go in for on those miuing grounds. Now, Gympie is known as tbe "Hornets;" Maryborough has. the "Wasps" and the "Emus;" why, what else are we to expect? The Hornets haven't sent on their officers yet, so no particulars can now be given as to the isaine. Southerden is pretty sure to be their i secretary, f...

Eagle Farm Training Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 12 May 1883

Eagle Farm Training Notes. [BY HEBMIT.] " A Trainer on a lonely hill Will do a deed of mystery. And " Scribes" will several columns fill With that trial and all its history. The trainer will be all surprised At the facta they have collected, And the owner, when they meet bis eyeu, . Will be equally affected -Sporting Life. Saturday, May 5th. These lovely bright mornings tempt trainers at an early hour to the exercise ground, indeed one must be about with the stars to catoh the early birds. This morning Young Australia was first to perform, And he did three rounds of strong work in the dork Phoenix, following with a useful twico round, but it was still too dark to see anything of the work done. After this came Rioter, who strided along in good style over three miles, going vigorously and well. Laura and Victor went down to the sod wall and had a merry spin together; Victor, wbo had the lightest weight up, having most to say at the finish. New Chum and Brickie did strong work, the for...

Sporting Gossip. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 12 May 1883

Sporting Gossip. [BY HERMIT.] Thbb9 is often a good deal of talk aboat the duties of a horse-owner towardB the public, but whilst laying down the law as many do, and often in rather an absurd manner, they forget that there are also certain duties due froim the public to owners, and Me rock on which, they split, is really'that the former frequently try to take the lead where they should be content to, follbw. Shortly after the entries for the Brisbane Cup and Moreton Handicap, and before the weights appeared, a certain backer ol horses took 300to 18 about the two Glencoes, ! and the money in the market being all absorbed, the owners, I understand, were naturally annoyed when theywishedtp back himthemselves, andfoundthey could, not do so: indeed, ; I saw a report in a northern paper that he was a: doubtful starter lor this reason. However, as soon as he was landed here, thebacker referred toat onoe sought out Mr. Rutherford, told him he had the znoney, and offered himafair share of it...

Cricket. " Jovial, jocund, jolly bowlers, As if they were the world's controllers." —BARNABY. PRENTICE CHALLENGE CUP. UNION V. STANLEY. [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 12 May 1883

Cricket. " Jovial, jocund, jolly bowlers, As if they were the world's controllers." -BABSABY. PRENTICE CHALLENGE CUP. UNION V. STANLEY, THE Unions, after a hardly fought contest, were obliged to admit their inability to compete with the Stanleys, at any rate for this season. Tbey had at the end of the first day an un wholesome task cut out, and when Jones and H. Smith raised the total to 92 (31 ahead) they, although still hopeful, could not very well expect a wiu, Jones started off on the continuation' of his innings as if he intended to make a day of it, but Smith let fiy at an off long hop from Armstrong, which got. too high, was skied and collared by the bowler. It is a pity for Jones that the season is so nearly over, as he seems to be just getting to like it. His 15 not out was very well played. The Unions only topped the total by 21, scoring in all 52. Voller again put himself forward with one-half of that number, and deserves all credit for his upright bat and confident play....

A Peep at the Shows. "You were not at the play to-night, Don Carlos. How happened it?"—The Spanish Student [Newspaper Article] — Queensland Figaro — 12 May 1883

A Peep at the Shows. "You were not at the play to-night, Don Carlos. How happened it ?"-The Spanish Student " HAVE you heard Archibald Forbes ? " is the question every body puts to you, and the invariable answer is "Yes?" " Have you seen the redoubtable, much-travelled E. S. Smythe? " and the answer is again, " Yes." Amongst the " Kings and Princes I have met "-a remarkable work which I am now preparing for the Press-I shall put in the front rank the King of Specials and the Prince of Business Managers. In fact, Smythe's marches and countermarches are almost as many and as rapid as Forbes' have been. The writer has encountered him in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Sydney on various occassions, and now the ubiquitous S. turns up at Brisbane. It was only the other day that R. S. S. was in Adelaide conferring with the promoters of the projected Theatre, Arcade, and Hotel Co. that is to transform a North Terrace and William Street block. In our advertising columns will be found Smythe's futur...
